Migration beginning ...
#1021 - 02/05/04 06:45 PM (162.114.211.139)

I'm from RoadBikeReview, which just changed its interface to something so unreadable a lot of us are bailing out. Several of us hope to find a home here.

We come in peace ...

Ya', I noticed you trying to exhort the thundering herds. See we have set a trap for you all when you migrate here. As one of your tribe said, he thought you would eat well here. Because this is a much more 'modern' forum, we have created a 'black hole' into which you will be sucked into as you cross the electronic divide. You will remain in there as we will slowly absorb your energy. Not only will we live longer, we will be able to climb better, sprint faster and our bikes will be prettier!

Any thoughts on building a Fixie from a '67 Raleigh 3 speed,
I weighed the frame last night, It came in at a hefty 7 lbs. oof!

Gotta love those horizontal dropouts though...

You guys are all welcome of course. These forums were created for owners of individual bicycle brands but that doesn't mean we can't create other categories such as this "General Discussion" area. If there's other topic areas you would like to see here, please post your ideas in the Suggestion Box and I'll be happy to oblige. I'm not the fastest to get things done but eventually I'll get `em done if you're patient.

The nice thing about these forums is the fact that while you can hang out in your favorite specific forum but tools like searches and displaying new topics posted in the last N-hours allows you to co-mingle and get information you're looking for very effectively.

Aloha,

K

I have no influence and I have not yet committed to your grand experiment.

But this one does seem better than the "new" RBR.

Not as good as the "old" RBR.

Maybe I'll get used to it. Maybe I won't.

Ed,

Thanks much. As for building the site, all I do is host the webserver and tweak the software. The site is really built by its participants - in this case us fellow cyclists! It is what we make of it as a community.

Some differences between these cycling forums and others is; you see no flashing banners, no pop-up windows, and is run by a cyclist (ie. your's truly) with no other agenda other than using these forums to meet friends, participate, and have fun.

Also, you will notice these forums are the only ones linked to by some of the manufacturer's websites. Calfee, Strong, Spectrum Cycles, are some examples. I used to host the Serotta forum here until Ben decided to do his own thing. That was unfortunate but I invite any manufacturer who wants to use this website to host "their own" forum. In nearly every case, these companies have been delighted to do so and maintain a very respectful presence. They use their forums to provide feedback without spamming people with marketing hype. Check out the postings by Tom Kellogg in the Spectrum Cycles forum as one example. There are other frame builders who lurk here as well. Richard Sachs, Kirk Pascenti, Dave Kirk, and others. They even have their own "framebuilder's" forum that's visible only to them. Over time I hope these forums will grow by virtue of the fact that they're going to remain non-commercial and free. I'm using the same philosophy that dates back to the old days of the Internet where everything was done in the spirit of sharing. Yeah there will always be the trolls but that's where I hope I can step in and help out. Once again, enjoy!

Take care,

Gary (aka Kahuna)

ColnagoFE,

But you must try it out for a while. Y'know, kick the tires a bit. Besides the non-commercial aspect of these forums, there's other (ie. technical) reasons why this could become one of the better cycling communities out there. To show you what I mean, try a simple experiment; Go to Google and type in something like "Seven Axiom" and see what comes up. OK so Bikefanclub shows up pretty high in the list, what difference does it make you might ask? Over time, the search engines are going to make this place become a treasure chest of relevant information - trust me on this. Most other forums exist as islands unto themselves for the most part - not all, but many of them.

Anyway have fun!

-K

WTF happened to the old RBR? new [Re: OldEd]
#1050 - 02/05/04 10:47 PM (66.149.51.74)

I've just been there, trying to respond to Gregg's pleas not to leave, and I can't reply to anything on the old board.

The new board won't accept my screen name/password.

So, after having been there from the day it was born, I'm done with it. I hope this is an adequate replacement.

But since I can't respond to Gregg on his board, I'll do it here. The request has been made to "stay at RBR", and we've been told that "it's not cool" to encourage people to leave. As far as I'm concerned, RBR just shut down their forum and replaced it with something not remotely comparable. I didn't leave because I wanted to. I liked it there. The new forum, however, wouldn't even let me login. What's a guy supposed to do? It wasn't a question of "staying" anywhere. If I had a choice, I would have stayed where we were. It was a question of moving to a new site, sponsored by RBR, or another site, sponsored by somebody else. This site appears superior to the one RBR is offering - but at the end of the day, I'd rather be on the old RBR.

It won't be complete without Doug and Steam, although the latter could probably get us all booted off for guilt by association.

Now get out the mash, and let's talk some trash!

TJeanloz,

I sympathize with your plight yet as the admin here all I can say is I find it gratifying when people realize some of the technical benefits of these forums. At the same time I recognize that most of these forums have very similar features. It's the participants who provide the real value. They can turn the worst forum (technically speaking) into gold by virtue of the personalities who contribute the content and create their own close knit community. However, having a technically good forum AND a great community at the same time is rare and something that deserves to be tried.

Aloha,

K

This forum was created for general biking questions. I think we'd be cluttering it up if we tried to resume our sociopolitical/off topic discussions we had at RBR. I'll certainly post and answer general biking questions, but I'll limit it to that.
