Kickin' tires new [Re: Kahuna]
#1062 - 02/06/04 02:32 AM (206.81.101.94)

The energy here is calmer than the new RBR site - I immediately felt like I could breathe easier and in peace unlike the other place which is dark and monstrous. But this place is far from being like the way things were, and maybe it shouldn't be forced to change too quickly. There's a pristine feel here which I hope remains, protected from slash and burn efforts to bring change. I'll still go to the other site and try to participate, even though its format has become so cluttered I feel as lost as a country hick who just got off the bus in Emerald City. This place I'll come to for other reasons, which remain to be defined. Meantime, thank you Kahuna for welcoming me to your cool retreat.

such a sence of loss over something like a discussion board. I find myself clicking back to RBR throughout the day and missing the familiar set up and people.

This board is pretty new, only a couple of months. What I like is the willingness of the administrator, Kahuna, to plug in features and forums that we ask for. He wants this place to become a very bicycle-centric hangout for people of all stripes who want to learn from each other and be a social group too.

The 'old' RBR forum was great, but had a some limitations that I think this forum has overcome. There is room for good bicycling forums of all kinds, it's not an either/or situation.

Actually I was just over looking at the RBR forums for the first time and was shocked to find they have copied the almost exact same idea of our manufacturer's forums.

I'm sure Gregg Kato is probably an OK guy but I'm not sure I agree with copying another site's concept in an almost identical fashion.

Actually, I live in New England, not known for its level terrain.
I was a bit shocked at the weight of the stripped down frame. I thought " well i bet i'll get really fit peddaling
this bugger around".
I'm beginning to re-think my fixie plans,
The 'ol Raleigh will probably be restored and used as a occasional commuter rig.

Another migrator here. Used to enjoy the RBR board. Found this site a short time back after the old calfee boards went down. Hope others also come this way. This is a nice site

One of my favorite features is when you go to the Main Index, scroll down at the bottom there's links for "View recent messages". This is a cool time-saver that makes it easy to find new stuff that otherwise would require hunting around in the various forums.

This question will be on the test.

It's curious to see how many anon lurkers and newbies, who've never contributed a damn thing to the rbr forum, are now oozing out the woodwork to voice their opinion and tell us to quit whining. When you don't bother to contribute, inferior software is a non-factor. It serves as a good lesson to us when migrating. We should make positive contributions and show respect for those who came before us.

that's how I felt.. like being kicked out of home and squeezed into telephone booth /not that I haven't seen fellow cyclists dose off in one in late hour/

First, I had to re-register, my old account got hi-jacked, and on top you can't really use new forum! it is nice after you open a thread, but on top level it is completely unusable: who has time to open every thread?

PS I will surely miss old RBR, but hey, if they decided to commit suicide

It is a shame about the old RBR board. Sort of like having an old friend move away and your new neighbor isn't very friendly

Just checking things out.

I can tell lots of people have disappeared from "over there;" Noncycling is almost dead.

I needed to quit spending so much time on the internet, anyway, so in a way I suppose it's a blessing.

I'll lurk a bit.

Out.

Doug: I never heard any real reason why the RBR board was changed into it's current format. Do you know?

The last episode of Ed did leave one wanting, didn't it?

no clue new [Re: Dave_Thompson]
#1158 - 02/10/04 04:56 PM (63.207.250.150)

I wasn't privy to any more info than the public. I can speculate all day long:

1. The old software was no longer supported. They did say this. That could cause problems if glitches arise.

2. Their license agreement on the old software expired, and it was too expensive to renew, or not available to renew.

3. There is some secret advantage to the new software, like requiring registration and bio info that can be sold or utilized to raise money. We know RBR had $ problems.

4. The new software maybe runs on servers off site, allowing them to sell off hardware. Again, pure speculation.

Given the universal objections to the change, I have to believe that the decision was forced upon them, and was not voluntary. In other words, it HAD to go. Nothing else makes sense. If it were indeed just a business decision, it would not be the one that I would have made.

All that aside, I see this as a done deal. I've asked whether the new software can include a full thread view, and they say "no." It's too bad. I really liked the old software. It was very intuitive and user friendly, the very essence of the site.

Like someone else said, it's like you moved away from your old neighborhood where you had lots of friends and life was good. Sorta sad to go, but life goes on.

It's interesting how the 'look and feel' of a website can attract or repel people. I too thought the 'old' site was friendly and relatively intuitive. It was fairly easy to follow the thoughts and threads, and made one think carefully when posting to an earlier post.

I like this site because of the administrator's (Kahuna) flexibility about what he will open up here, and his *true* commitment to bicycling. He started the second Serotta forum when the first one became too commercial, and then the Calfee, Spectrum, Strong and Kirk forums. Now this. I don't know Kahuna personally, but in the casual e-mails that I've had with him, I get the sense that this board is really his labor of love. Plus anyone that can haul their carcass on a bike up and down the Haleakala Volcano road (0 to 10,000+ feet in a relatively short distance) has my undying admiration.

I'm hopeful if we prove ourselves as new [Re: Spoiler]
#1188 - 02/11/04 02:22 PM (162.114.211.139)

valuable citizens here, Kahuna may be persuaded to add a little board called 'The Water Cooler' or something, where we could discuss off-topic events of the day/news/politics without imposing it on the bike content here.

I'm not sure he restricts off-topic discussion here in the 'anything goes'forum, but I certainly wouldn't want to swamp it with OT posts.
