rotator cuff recovery new
#487 - 01/05/04 10:12 PM (24.13.146.161)

i'm currently recovering from rotator cuff surgery on december 12th, specifically, a mumford procedure and debridement. the week before the operation i was slogging up a muddy hill on my cross bike and met another cx'er that reported good luck with his rotator surgery, but said that his complete recovery time was about 12 months. my doc says about 8 more weeks before he'll let me out on the bike again (ouch!).

anyone out there have similar surgery? what sort of recovery time have did you see?

My wife had rotator cuff surgery last year. She followed her doctor's orders (regarding getting back on a bike) to the letter. She was riding pretty much full steam (roadie)after 3~4 months. She did do physical therapy and lots of excercises during the 'down' time.

I would trust your Doc and physical therapist.

Eric:

I had rotator cuff surgery just over a year ago. I had torn it pretty badly back around '85 in a pretty bad track crash. The surgery back the in '85 patched things up a bit but it was back in a day that the full fix technique was a few years off. In those intervening years my bicep tendon took a beating and is now only about 25% there. Anyway, the proper fix was done December, a year ago By Neal Stansbury (yes, the masters roadie). The Bicep tendon will likely only last another decade, but the rotator cuff is great. I can do things that I haven't been able to do since '85. Matter of fact, I had my best road season in many years this last season. I underwent a few months of very tough and painful PT early last year, but it really did the trick. One can not fully recover without a well designed and followed PT program. Without it, you won't get more than partial recovery. If you don't have insurance for therapy, it is worth paying a therapist for a consult to get a program. Work at it hard so that you can ride hard. Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement, Tom! It's great motivation to keep up with my therapy when it gets rough.

Can't say my experience has been as good. new [Re: eric_owens]

I had surgery about 14 months ago. Original injury was from a butterfly weight machine and then really botched it up in a MTB accident. Worked with PT for 9 months before surgery and followed up surgery with an extensive PT regimen. I still can't sleep on my right shoulder, probably never will be able to. My range of motion is normal but certain movements, such as raising my extended arm diagonally across my body with my palm up, are painful and weak. I can bike with little ill effect save some aching. All in all I am better off after surgery because my range of motion has been restored but I experience many of the same problems as before surgery.

Follow a good PT program. Expect a long recovery, the rotator cuff does not have a good blood supply.

Had a friend that went through the surgery. With proper PT and determination he has made a full active recovery. Good Luck.
