I bought a used bike on ebay. When the bike arrived, there were some discrepencies with what the ad described. 1.The rear derailleur was described as being XTR. It turned out to be STX-RC. 2. The ad also said, "XTR front and rear." I am at fault for not asking specific questions, but I took this to mean either the brakeset or the hubs, since in a separate phrase he states the brakelevers/gear shifters were XTR.(which they were indeed). It turns out the brake calipers are Alivio while only the pads are XTR. I could see how a non-bike person could think this stamping on the pads was the name for the entire brakeset. 3. The weird thing is that the ad said the bike was size 18". The top tube clearly says size 16.75 inches. But the bike fits perfectly nontheless. The seller did ship it promptly. The seller is a pawn shop, not the actual bike owner, so they aren't bike experts.
What's your opinion on what kind of feedback this merits?

Based on what you've said, I would tell you to ask for your money refunded and ship the bike back. While you bear some of the responsibility of ascertaining exactly what you are getting, the seller has a bigger responsibility to accurately describe his item when he does. The size of the bike was incorrect, therefore not right for you, and the equipment that was described was of a lower (cheaper) quality than told. You paid "X" dollars expecting an 18" bike with an XTR rear dérailleur, and you received neither. Sometimes, but not always, pawn shops can be somewhat ignorant of specifics about bikes.
Short story, call, ask for a refund based on inaccurate information provided and be prepared to ship the bike back.

Ditto Dave's answer - the bike was misrepresented. It's immaterial if it was done intentionally or unintentionally. You bid and purchased a set of goods that wer not what they were claimed to be nor what you expected. And no, I don't thnk you could've asked enough questions to get to the truth. In either case, the person didn't know enough to describe it accurately, or chose not to describe it that way. I'd feel even more strongly considering you thought you were buying XTR and ended up with STX/Alivio. I may be foggy on my MTB component hierarchies, but I think that's as far as one can go from top to bottom.
I'd make arrangements to send it back (assuming you don't want to live with it.) If you do want to live with it then no, I don't think you should leave negative feedback. I'd probably go with neutral and say they described it incorrectly.

Do you want/intend to keep the bike notwithstanding the discrepancies? Treating the transaction under the UCC, you have the right to reject the goods as being non conforming. (not sure of the exact requirements or terminology, I haven't looked at the UCC for a while)

they refuse to handle it properly. If they do the right thing then leave positive or none at all. You have to remember you could be affecting someones business here.
It may be easier for them to refund a portion of your money and you can find the XTR parts on E-bay. If it fits, that's what I would do. If you return it, they should pay your return shipping.
Be ready to explain the differences between XTR and the parts that are on it.
What ever you do, don't leave any feedback until the whole thing is settled and you are satisfide or told you won't be. Once you leave feedback their motivation to see you happy will go probobly down.

I emailed the seller about the problems and they immediately responded with an offer for a partial refund or total refund and return of the bike. I like the bike, the frame actually fits me nice. The 7-speed XTR shifters and brake levers are in perfect working order. I'll scan ebay for some nice upgrade cantis. I'm looking at some Suntour or Diacompe units. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

If you like the bike, then keep it. Sounds like you lucked out with getting a frame size that fits, even though it's not what was advertised. So i recommend you get that partial refund to make up for the lack of XTR parts, and then be done with them.
