Cold weather blues.............
#1382 - 02/19/04 10:37 AM (152.163.252.101)

Ridng has been very minimal here in the Northeast. With the combination of cold weather and the still ealy sunset I have done little riding.

The cold is just killing me. Layer after layer of clothing. Short rides. AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Seemed the appropriate forum

Too bad more people didn't check this site out. Easy to use.

I feel your pain!... new [Re: easypedaler]
#1383 - 02/19/04 12:19 PM (24.17.236.162)

...to coin a phrase. Here in the Northwest it's mostly the same. It doesn't get light 'til 7am or so, and goes dark at 5pm. Still lots of snow on the ground and some ice on the roads, though because it's so dry here the snow is going away pretty quickly.

I finished building up my new Litespeed the other week and was dying for a ride. Just had to ride! Seem like it took a half an hour to suit up, layer after layer. Plus booties, glove liners, balaclava and all that for just a twenty minute ride!! Dang I hate it when that happens.

So lately my bicycle endeavors have been waiting for my Kirk to come back from paint and waxing the Litespeed with Lemon Pledge!

I agree - but when you do post and nobody responds, you tend to lose interest.

I just think its a matter of people knowing that this forum is here. RBR seems to be surviving. Not many have left if any at all.

Dave...new bike sounds great. Enjoy the new ride. Weather will cooperate sooner or LATER(this is more likely)

Weather is getting better.... new [Re: easypedaler]
#1403 - 02/20/04 03:34 PM (24.17.236.162)

....but I'm still sort of cranky from not being on the bike enough. Last winter, here in Spokane, was so mild that we were able to ride all but a week if it. So when the big spring rides came around, we were ready! This winter OTOH, snow has been on the ground since October, below freezing temps quite a bit, what's the deal?!?!

I still hate spending more time to get ready for the ride than I do riding. And at my age, I lose conditioning fast. If I don't stay on top of it, it's a real struggle to get back up to speed. And that's where I am now.

Plus I'm anxious to see what my "new" Kirk looks like. A couple more weeks I'm told............

.... but it's still not warm enough! new [Re: Dave_Thompson]
#1407 - 02/20/04 09:38 PM (24.6.211.100)

Living in San Jose CA I know the weather here is better than in the majority of the country, but I'm just not as motivated to get out as much as I should. When it's 80 degrees F or higher for 8 months of the year, you tend to get a little bit spoilt and less interested whenever it's a little cool, windy or wet. The forecast is for rain on both Saturday & Sunday this weekend but I know I must get out if my legs aren't to seize up from under use.

Dave... I have similiar feelings about cold weather riding that you do. Takes longer to get ready than you do riding. I also lose my conditioning fast. Don't ride as far as some the other forum riders but I lose the conditioning just as fast. The cold weather just goes right through me. Rain and cold this weekend.

Easy...

Having lived in SoCal and Hawaii for many years I'm a cold-weather weenie. Actually I don't mind the cold as much as I do wet&cold. If there's any dampness at all, I'm not goin'. Pure cold can be beautiful; crystal clear, quiet and great for riding hills.

And being an official 'old-guy' my conditioning goes down the toilet real fast. I love to do long rides. During the season, every workday about twenty miles and on weekends I try for at least 75 miles and look for organized centuries. If I'm off the bike for a couple of weeks, it feels like I have to start all over again. And at my age I don't have too many years worth of serious riding left. At least as many as I would like.

YEEEAAAARRRRGGH!! new [Re: Dave_Thompson]
#1425 - 02/21/04 11:06 PM (24.17.236.162)

(My best Howard Dean imitation) Just came back from a 2-hour ride. Perfect! Cool, clear, no wind just a slight breeze and the roads were dry. Man it feels good, and I'm tired. The new Litespeed is quite good, better than I imagined. I've never owned one but this one is good. Fun to ride.

Goin' again tomorrow. Need the miles 'cause our first century is in late April.

Feeling guilty now new [Re: easypedaler]
#1427 - 02/22/04 12:26 AM (24.6.211.100)

Just back from a very nice 40 mile spin, and now I'm feeling guilty about my prior laziness. Once I get out onto the road it only takes about 60 seconds to realise I've made the right decision.

Got to love the wind new [Re: easypedaler]
#1444 - 02/22/04 05:20 PM (12.75.197.125)

Got 20 miles in yesterday. Got to ~46 here but there was a constant 15mph wind with regular 30mph gusts. Still, was good to get out but I'd have taken 35 degrees and calm. Still debating about today, 45 with 20 mph wind...the road or the trainer?

Today was another good day! new [Re: easypedaler]
#1448 - 02/22/04 11:49 PM (24.17.236.162)

Geez, it's almost spring-like here. Temp 48, lotsa sun. Dang, I hate it when that happens!

By contrast (envy) I was in San Diego the week of January 23~30 and there were bicycles everywhere! I spent some time driving up Hwy 101 from Torrey Pines to Oceanside and saw literally hundred of bikes in a few hours. Dang, I hate it when that happens!

I did decide to ride today. Another 20 with winds but it was sunny and roads were quiet. Ya, getting outside to ride was worth it.

Man, I never thought I'd miss San Jose... new [Re: Dougal]
#1470 - 02/24/04 04:50 PM (63.150.56.105)

I went to school there, but moved to Reno in the '70s. The San Joseification of Reno is picking up speed, so I might as well be riding on Meridian Avenue now. At least I could be wearing shorts.

and another problem with winter.. new [Re: Dave_Thompson]
#1537 - 02/27/04 06:23 PM (24.17.236.162)

..at least for me is that I buy bike 'things' to keep my interest up and to get me all jazzed to try my 'things' out in the spring. Long winters can be quite expensive. This winter cost me a new Litespeed frameset, 3 new Brooks saddles and a set of Dura Ace triple shifters. Plus lots of little miscellaneous stuff, but who's keeping track? (my wife for one)

Yeah, winter is fun only 'till UPS arrives with the box. Then it has to happen all over again....and again... and again, until Spring arrives. Then I find out how much useless stuff I've bought.

See my 'thoughtful' pic in the Photo Gallery: http://www.bikefanclub.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1283
