What awful news on CNN. So shocking at first I thought it was a bad joke. How sad.

Very sad news and such an unhappy end for a man who has suffered from depression and who knows what other inner torments. His family and friends will be devasted and we, fans of the bike, will remember that he died too young and yet how little we likely understood his pain. I will not remember his foibles and indiscretions, failures or deceits. I will remember his smile and the way he could ride up and up and up. If there is more than finality to death then I wish Marco a long, sweet climb at the front of the group, lifting joyfully out of his saddle, flying upwards like an angel.

Cyclingnews reported that he checked into a hotel, not far from his home, and "A note with "some thoughts" was found on a desk in the room."
It's tough reading about all the friends who tried unsuccessfully to reach out to him. Under different circumstances, I'd remember him as the smiling Italian hero. But it honestly makes me cry to think about him sequestered in a room behind a locked door, strangled by depression and solitude, swallowing pills instead of climbing a hill.
Contrast this with the joy we all felt during Lance's first TDF victory in 1999. The sport contains exhausting extremes of triumph and trajedy. The riders aren't the only ones who experience these. By making ourselves fans of the sport, we leave ourselves vulnerable to the glorys and grief.

It was just insane. Attack, crack, recover, attack, crack ... Hold nothing back. Divine madness. He was born to do the thing he did, and somehow it destroyed him. It's just ... sad.

It is a terrible loss. I will always remember him for the excitement he brought to the sport. I was lucky enough to see him race in 2 stages of the 2000 Giro. When he rode up to the staging area at the start of one stage the crowd went wild. He appeared to be genuinely touched by the response. Sad to see that he was now ignoring is fans and friends.

I THINK "IL PIRATA" WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR HIS RIDING LONG AFTER THE SCANDAL DIES DOWN. THAT OUT OF THE SADDLE CHARGE UP A MOUNTAIN WON'T SOON BE DUPLICATED - PANTANI WAS KING OF THE MOUNTAINS. ADIEO IL PIRATA...
