I wanted to title this post, âIn defense of trollsâ but the revised title sounded better.
After reading some of the more self-indulgent (or my forum is greater than thouâs) threads on the Serotta site (no offense to the Serotta forum family. The Serotta forum has lots to offer and paradoxically, I go there to read the interesting non-Serotta stuff. Oh and yes, you âre ok and Iâm ok) I am further convinced why even Trolls (within reason) have their place in forum society. If not the least is to provide a âlevelingâ effect to counter the [fill in any adjectives your imagination can muster]. Sad, but even I do not want a lawsuit to come my way or gosh forbid, lose my forum privileges.
Language is powerful but there is something to be said about unintentional provocationâŚ.However, I do not condone grammarian bullying. Everyone who wishes to participate should and we all bring something special to the community. Indeed, language use is one of the great challenges that forum admins must contend with and I do not envy them this.
Now if this post offends anybodyâŚas if anybody but me reads stuff on this forum (sorry K) I will zap it or the big Kahuna himself will send it to oblivion.
Wittgenstein wrote (and ironically I am a probably violating this). âWhereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silentâ*
Or in the wise words of Bumblebee Dave, âWe. Should. Move. Onâ

Dave,
I thought you captured the issue perfectly with your post on the "my two cents" thread"

I dunno what the fighting is about there, it's almost as if a 'cult of personality' is developing. And a 'them vs us' mentality has emerged. Hell, I like anything bike and visit the sites that provide me with infomation, entertainment and a sense of 'belonging' that I want. I don't get that sense there, I feel like an outsider and am not as inclined to participate as I use to be.
I think most likely we have posted this thread in the wrong box. Isn't this "suggestions"?

Concur with your comments. I read but wouldn't want to live there necessarily.
I think I understand what you mean about where to post stuff that doesn't quite fit into a BFC category...I do not know if Kahuna will make adjustments for this. For example I want to post some trivial Sports Poll info from the MSNBC website showing that a majority of MSNBC viewers voted Lance's fifth tour victory as the "biggest [sports] story of the year." Now where should I post this thing? In the Trek Fan Club?
FWIW - the URL for the story is: MSNBC Viewers: Lance's 5th Tour: Sports Story of the Year? It's not about the bike, right?
Could it be that cycing is crawling back into mainstream consciousness?

I was an avid reader and somewhat frequent poster at the old Serotta site. Since the new one started I've somehow been "offput" by something there. I've posted once and just find the "personality" odd. Tough to infer anything over the internet, but I agree with the tenor of this thread. I've not been able to fully comprehend what it is I don't like, but it has the feel of a patricians gathering where the host and his cohorts have deigned to allow some (but not all) of the rable to partake in the offerings. The my two cents and the polite rejoinder threads are indicative of the feel. Nothing polite about the rejoinder and the feel of defending the wall of china. Well, I hope it changes and I hope this forum has success. I guess I will lurk here and there for a while.

"patrician" is an apt description....more please until we tire of this 'meta-forum' speak.

Even though it goes slighty against the grain of concept for these forums, based on your example you make a good case for having a general topics category. Therefore as with the new Independant Fabrications forum that was recently created, I'll do the same for a general banter area that's not bike specific.
Just give me a day or two or three to ponder the various ways to organize such an area. Anyway great suggestion. Thanks and have a great Holiday!

Kahuna,
Thanks for your patience....BTW - that 'signature' function is dangerous. I did not know it worked retroactively.

Kahuna,
While categories are being considered please include Vanilla Bicycles to the lot. Much has been said about these frames and their builder.
