I can go out and buy a new bike from reviews I read on a board like this, trying the bike out and talking with the dealer. This is how I bought my new Calfee Luna.
make multiple decisions per day (work day) that has drastic effects on people and how they live.
can make financial decisions at home without the slightest hesitation.
Decided that this forum is much easier to uses than the new RBR forum
BUT.......
I can't decide on new pedals. Its killing me. It really is.
Have been using crap SPD pedals. Time for them to GO. Pedals must fit Sidi MTB shoes. Have decided between a Time ATAC type pedal or Speedplay frogs. Just cannot make my mind up.
1. have read that the time pedals have unconventional float and engagment characteristics.
2. Some say frogs are not durable.
And so forth.
Just wanted to vent.

Frogs are very durable! My wife has used them for over three years on her Calfee (she likes MTB shoes for walking) we use them on our tandem and I have a set on a rain bike. So far, zero problems and cleats are holding up fine. I don't know where you heard something about the lack of durability with Frogs. That is contrary to everything that I've heard and experienced.
Plus I've made several phone calls and e-mails to Speedplay for information and they have always responded quickly. So I like their customer service too.

Used frogs on a mtn bike. Too many unintended disengagements. Don't know if this would be a problem on the road but don't think so. Other than that, I thought the pedals and cleats were well made and durable.

I use Frogs on my road bike and like them. The pedals weigh 258 grams, less than most road pedals, and the cleats don't weigh much either.
I haven't had any durability issues. I use a Napa injector nozzle on a cheap grease gun and give them a shot of grease every once in a while. The cleats show a little wear from walking around on concrete but I try to minimize that.
The float hasn't bothered me from the first day I used them on. I like that the float is limited to the inside so my heels never hit the chain stays.

I'm still riding with cleatless MB shoes and toe clips, because I get off and walk around a lot (got three sets of barely used clipless pedals in the parts bin, though...).
Two of my riding buddies, both experienced riders who do several centuries a year, have thrown everything else away and gone with Frogs. No problems with durability, and they like the float, though one said it's "like pedaling on an ice cube" until you get used to it. Same guy has had knee problems off and on for 20 years, and he said they've helped with that, too.
Personally, I think I'm going to get a set of Eggbeaters to use for a week and throw into the parts bin.

Leaning toward getting the frogs.
Was thinking about the time cyclo pedal. Heavy but look nice

I have Frogs on my mountain bike and three sets of Speedplays on my road bikes. My complaint with the Frogs is I do not get what I believe is strong feedback on engagement. It is hard to tell when you are in them. Speedplays have an audible click.
I find the Speedplay cleat very easy to walk in with the cleat cover. They have a low stack height. There is very little in walking in my Sidi road shoes and my Sidi Mt. Bikes shoes. The Frog cleat sticks below the "treads" which means I'm on a little of the cleat. I also had to grind away part of the tread to fit the cleat in. I wouldn't want to walk home in either. A good mt. bike shoe with a stiff sole isn't all that comfortable to walk in IMHO.
If you don't want the unlimited float the new Zero is an awesome pedal. They have improved the cleat and pedal engagment more. There are now interlocking teeth. Everyone I know who has them loves them even a former died in the wool Time fan.
Everybody I know that bought ATACs has liked them. They use them off road. I've also heard good reports on Egg Beaters and the other little pedal that I can't remember the name now. It is round. There were many discussions you can search on the old forum.

I previously have tried Time, Look and other pedals but went to speedplay about 10 years ago because of continued knee problems.
I have a couple of sets of frogs. I use one set on my mtn bike and the other on my road bike when doing Cycle Oregon. They have been great. I did bend the spindle on one pedal last summer when I hit a rock on the downstroke really hard. I finished the ride just fine but the pedal just didn't spin well after that so I bought a replacement after my LBS tried to fix it.I also have them on my commuter bike, I just build up the tread on the Sidi mtn shoes with a little bit of epoxy glue to keep the cleats from hitting the ground.
I use speedplay X/1's on my roadbike, in fact I just bought a new pair of Ti X/1's for my new Calfee. Very light at 150 gms and very easy to use. I have heard good things about the new zeros but I wanted to stick with the X/1 since that is what I have on my Litespeed.
