slipping post???????(kinda long) new
#1561 - 02/29/04 09:06 PM (67.80.98.28)

I rode my New Tetra-Pro today, prbably my third ride . Amazing bike, I just love it. I did 53 miles on my other bike(I.F.)and the went out on the Calfee for another 20.the Calfee(The roads a little wet with all of the snow melt) . Now my question. My seat post is slipping. When this happened the first time I cleaned the post with alchol and tighted the seat post clamp. It only moves a little(I can tell by the little bulge in the electrical tape the I have around the post. The seat post I have in now is a 2003 campy Record carbon post. I have a Thomson post on another bike. Do you guys think that the thomson post will be better beacuse it has the grooves vs. the campy post being very smooth. Any ideas would be great....Thanks

The Thomson will definitely not slip, those little ridges grab like crazy.

That being said, you should be able to keep the Campy post from slipping. Try cleaning the inside of the seat tube as well as the post. A good way to keep alcohol from dripping into your setpost is to take the seatpost out and hang the bike from the ceiling of the garage. Then you can use cotton balls, Q-tips, a brush, or anything else to scrub the inside of the seatube with alcohol, and any excess just runs out the tube. Don't forget to clean the post again before you replace it, and keep your hands off the post as the oils in your skin will come off on the post you just cleaned.

Good Luck

mike

Hi Waynebiker, this topic was discussed many times before on the old forum.
You'll need to rough up your seatpost where the clamp makes contact. I used some sandpaper on my USE alien 2 years ago and it hasn't slipped since.

Another question????
For the Thomson post....To grease or not to grease???That is the question....

I know for a carbon post, in a carbon frame, you do not grease, but for a Aluminum post in a carbon frame. Do you Grease? if so why? The Al. cannot bond to carbon, can it.

Where Aluminum and carbon fiber meet directly there will be galvanic corrosion. However, the Tetra has a fiberglass sleeve in the seat tube and the Aluminum seat post will not be in direct contact with CF. So generally speaking, you should grease (insulate) the areas where there may be contact.

HOWEVER, Craig Calfee has told me directly to NOT grease my Aluminum seat post. Prior to being told this (many years ago), I was having some problems with seat post slipping.

Wayne,

I ride a Dragonfly with the Record Carbon seat post. I also had an initial problem with the Seatpost slipping. Evidently, my bike shop didn't tighten it enough. First of all, I would highly recommend you take the tape off of the seat post...you don't need it. Don't grease it what ever you do...never grease a carbon post. Lastly, get a torgue wrench or borrow one. You need one rated for Inch pounds or NM (nanometers?)...I think the rating for a seatpost is around 70 or 80 inch pounds (NOT FOOT POUNDS!) ...use the torque wrench to tighten the post..so, that you don't overtighten it! Worked for me!

Re: torquing seat tube clamps [Re: mb2k]

When CF seat posts first came onto the market, lotsa folks were having problems with cracking. Probably due to improper torquing of the clamp. Anyhow, a quick and dirty way to reduce the risk of over torquing and loading one spot of the seat post was to spin the clamp around 180°. What you then had was the seat tube relief (slit for clamping) facing the back like normal, but the relief on the clamp itself facing forward. That would put most of the clamping pressure on the "whole" section of seat tube rather than the slit side. You, in effect, distributed the clamping forces more evenly around the CF seat post. This technique may be a little "old school", but does it still apply to new CF seat post?

BTW, grease the seat clamp bolt for accurate torque reading, minimize corrosion and simplify removal or adjustment later.

NM is for Newtonmeters.
