older lemond ti
#1655 - 03/09/04 08:45 AM (218.145.25.19)

I'm hoping to find some history relating to an older lemond labeled ti frame that may have been made by merlin or seven. Both merlin and seven offered to try to help if I could give them a serial number but the bike is away in storage and I don't remember seeing a number on it anyway so thought I'd try asking here.
It's painted a metallic blue to grey fade with matching painted carbon fork and the yellow and red lemond decal scheme like on the lemond calfees in the photo gallery. Tubes all look round and straight including chain and seat stays. Horizontal rear dropouts.
The thing I'm hoping might make it identifiable is the way the seat stays attach to the sides of the seat tube at the cluster and are tapered or bevelled there like many lugged steel frame seat stays look. Seat post binder is integrated into the seat tube extension of a couple cm.
When I got it it had campy 8sp with brifters and delta brakes, ibis ti stem and syncros ti post. Thanks for any info.

lanton:

It sounds like one of the Sandvik made Lemonds. After Lemond Cycles (before Trek) decided not to source their titanium frames from Merlin, they got them from Sandvik. They had special Kestrel EMS forks with titanium dropouts. I don't know how many were made. Maybe you have one of these, who knows.

Thanks, yes this bike's fork has ti dropouts. When I first got it I assumed it was a painted kestrel ti ems with a ti steerer as well, but it's been in storage for a while and I can't remember for sure about the steerer. Thanks again, this is really interesting, I've gone from clark kent to litespeed to merlin/seven to sandvik! Do you know much about those frames?

Not really. They were made by Sandvik about the same time that Sandvik made the first Fuji Ti frames. Greg and his Dad who ran Lemond cycles decided to go with Sandvik instead of Merlin for apropriate business reasons; Merlin was more expensive than they were willing to pay. Ironically, Merlin offered Greg a two year exclusive on the "Extralight" technology when it was first developed. Lucky for Merlin that they were able to take advantage of it right off the bat.

Well, that sounds like the most likely lead so far. In looking for sandvik info it looks like they made bikes for alot of names, maybe even some confusion with litespeed there. Now curious if there was an orderly progression through various makers or just kind of all over the place. Almost wishing I'd stopped searching while under the pleasant but probably misguided thought that I might have a disguised merlin, but anyway, in my limited experience it's the nicest handling and most comfortable bike I've ridden, seems to have the lemond type geometry that I'd heard about before but never really given much weight.
