Anyone here have any idea as to how much longer the 9 speed Chorus and Record components will be produced? Im piecing together another bike,and am trying to decide whether to go with 9 or 10. Two of my bikes use 9 already and it works well for me. I really see no advantage to 10, other than the availability of a 29 tooth cog for the big hills. Any opinions out there?

I just had my LBS build me up a Calfee with Chorus 10 speed. I had ask about the 9 speed group, and he said is already having a hard time finding some of it. He is located in California, I don't know if that makes a difference. I just went with the parts that I thought would be most available for future service of repairs/replacements parts.

Go 10. Same hubs, same rear D. Just change the shift disk in the other bikes and get new cassettes and chains. Or just go 10 on one of the bikes and swap cassettes if you need to swap wheels. 10 sp shifts faster than 9, and it is smoother. I regularly ride 8 sp and 10 sp, and used to ride 9 sp a lot. 10 is the best of them all. It is not just about another gear, which is handy to have by the way. Once you get 10, you can gloat to your Shimano buddys that they are still on 9. They will think you are nuts till they upgrade, and find that 10 sp Shimano shifts faster than 9 sp.

Campag 10 speed shifters I believe can be modified to work with 9, though I have had no trouble getting 9 spd Ergo. Ders are easy to modify though if you need the expertise you could go to Branford. I'm deep into 9 with as many as 30 bikes outfitted in this configuration. I stash some and hate the notion of being "stuck" with "old" hubs and hard-to-find bits when it was the "standard" for so many years. I understand the marketing, the "better" crap that we are told about "upgrades" but as my tone suggests, I believe not one bit of it. I still buy 9spd because I have so much of it that it makes sense to keep the modern bikes as compatible as possible. Then again, I have very little interest in the vast majority of modern bikes, their putative improvements in "materials", or the direction of the bicycle industry by and large. We are sold things not because they are "better" but because they need to be sold. Go with what you like, you'll find it with a minimum of industry and some patience. Don't believe the LBS about "hard to find" because, well, that's nonsense too.

This subject has always gotten my back up since in reality Campy made the call purely on the reaction to Shimanos new nine speed offering and to further frustrate owners of the new Campy nine speed,in about a years time Campy brought out their ten speed.
Funny enough though Shimano did not respond to Campys ten immediately, but took their cool sweet time with their version of ten speed.
So what did i do??? well i waited with my trusty old eight speed and then just went to ten speed one time, but hey i can be patient.
Anyway if you have 9 speed all is not lost,it can be converted with a few bits and pieces in the ergo levers and a rear derailleur,along with in some instances a freehub body,cassette.
Branford bike has all the Campy info you will ever need to know and can convert your nine speed ergos for a reasonable price,as well as get you on your way to ten speed. Unfortunately the moral of this story is such that ten speed is here and you can bet that nine speed will be history.
