On another message board, the assertion is being made that the etchings on new Merlin frames create stress risers, with an implication that this results a latent defect in the tubing. Anyone out there with the technical expertise to comment on this?

I read that, too. While I'm not a metalurgist, I do have an engineering degree (how this matters, I don't know). Anyway, I doubt that this (added stress risers) is the case. Stress risers would not come from an etching (If this is indeed etched). They may (emphasis on may) come if this is cut with a tool. The only concern would be that the metal is thinned where it needs to be thicker, something I seriously doubt. I didn't add to the discussion on the S forum as I thought they were way to vitriolic about something so mundane. Hell, It's just a way to differentiate your brand.

Your take on the etchings is what my untutored gut reaction was. And I agree, that other board is filled with too many "TRUE BELIEVERS" who have a mind set that would have thrived during the Spanish Inquisition. Too much for even this Serotta owner. It's a shame given the wealth of valuble information that otherwise is available on that board.

I own three Serottas (2 road, 1 mtn.) and they are fine bikes, but the reverence exhibited on the S board escapes me. They are, after all, bikes. Many other bikes may be better. I also did not chime in when one of the threads started to focus on the ST rear. I would hate to suffer the inevitable. I have one (bought used) and, for the life of me, cannot see any benefit. If I were to replace my frame, it would be with a "normal" set of seat stays. What I would really like to see is some "super slo-mo" of this set up next to a normal one. That would be enough proof for me.
