Crash and Burn new
#2195 - 04/05/04 01:24 PM (4.4.128.185)

I guess like they say with motorcycles there are 2 kinds of riders, those who have crashed and those who are going to. Well as far as bicycles are concerned I just became a member of the crashed club. Misjudged my lean angle while peddling through a fairly tight turn at a pretty good clip (around 25+mph) and touched down my inside peddle, next thing I know my back tire feels like its about a foot off the ground and all hell breaks loose. I don’t know how I did it but I got unclipped before the bike and I went down. I managed to slide on my feet and rear end down the road so I ended up with a hole in my shorts, some road rash on my tush, and a bruised cut right shin. The damage on the bike consisted of trashed Easton EC 90 handlebars, Speedplay peddles, rubber boots that cover the hoods, the right Campy Record break leaver, Tacx bottle cage, and a brand new on it’s maiden voyage Fizik Gobi saddle (grounded completely down to the frame). Which for the 15 miles I had put on it felt like a definite keeper. I have to give an endorsement to the Campy Eurus wheels, that back wheel landed hard and in an awkward position and it stayed true.
Even though it sucks I crashed, I thank God because for the speed I was going and the how I went down it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully I’ll have my Alaris back on the road before the end of the week. Again as they say with motorcycles, keep your rubber side down.

you've learned a valuable life lesson here: skin heals-campy doesn't. of course, i hope you're OK-it sounds it. it does suck crashing but, everyone i know has hit the deck, i'm sure that doesn't make you feel better but it is a part (hopefully not experienced too often) of the sport.

Ouch. In all the years of riding in and around NYC, I've been fortunate enough not to have a crash here, until November '03. It's inevitable, but I got doored by livery cab as I started to accelerate from 26mph+ as the light turned green. I hit the door probably close to 30mph - no chance to hit the brakes since the door was literally thrown open. Interesting experience to put it mildly. The left Campy Record shifter was toast, and the rear wheel slightly out of true. I jammed a finger, and bruised my jaw on the edge of the car door. Very lucky as it could have been worse. Sounds like you were relatively lucky as well. Hope you get back on track soon!

Here's to all for a safe and crash free riding season

I do feel very lucky, hurt the old wallet more than anything else. Hopefully before the end of the week I'll be back on the road. Thanks again.
