Axel's MX Leader
#2242 - 04/07/04 02:25 AM (66.82.9.40)

I came into Axel's old MX Leader with Caloi decals from the Motorola team. It's something like 61.5 x58 and has a wheelbase longer than the road to Luz Ardiden. Overall it's in fine condition and lord knows that these bikes are going to out last us all. If I were getting a new lugged Merckx I'd opt for the Corsa 'cause this bike is overkill for anyone but the clydesdales amongst us. Still, a GREAT ride. We had some good weather last week so I went out with my wife at the end of a long day, she on her maiden voyage on her new Kirk (wond'rful bike!), and me on Axel's rig. This bike is so stable and holds the line so true that on the hills I was able to help the little lady holding one hand on the bars, the other on the back of her jersey (yes, she asked for help and around here there's no shame in askin'...the road is going up when it's not going up, so it's not like you have much choice). The ride is just wonderful and never have I been on bike that descends better. Axel is one tall glass of water but I like my bikes big and this one fits the bill perfectly. I am grateful to my pal "mavic" who passed it along. I'll put a picture in the gallery. The Caloi decals add that odd, special mojo too.

Dbrk,

I've always wondered what "Caloi" is. Could you enlighten us?
Gorgeous bike. I've always liked the Motorola team colors.

Caloi is actually a Brazilian bicycle maker, if I am not mistaken though of course they had nothing to do with these bikes in the way of construction. Caloi purchased, as it were, the down tube rights. There were a number of bikes in this era from Caloi who sold in Europe as well as in south America. The downtube has a small decal that confirms, "Brasil" it says plainly. The down tube decal reads Caloi by Eddy Merckx in small letters.

During the time this bike was first available from Merckx in these, the Motorola colors, the usual decal was the familiar Eddy Merckx like we saw on Moltenis, I mean, that size. These Caloi decals only came on the Motorola bikes.
