Bad crash, but the bikes ok
#2331 - 04/11/04 12:49 AM (67.164.108.64)

Bad crash, but the bike’s ok. We had just came over a 2km mile climb that also serves as the finishing hill for the penultimate time. Our 70 man field was now numbered about 25. I was sitting on as the gate keeper of a nicely running pace line that was pulling back a 4 man break. As we were sweeping through a fast left-hander, a tire blew, the guy couldn’t keep the back end together he went right across my front wheel. We were going strong into the head-wind so I’d say the were at about 27-28 mph. I went over the bars and took the brunt of it on the back side of my right should and rolled several times. I’ve got the complimentary road rash on all four corners, but what is strange is that the back of my helmet is crushed. The bike has a few new scars to add to the old and it’ll cost me a new spoke, but who cares. The purpose of my post implore everyone to wear your helmet. Make sure your friends wear theirs as well. I’ve already seen one guy life-flighted away from a race this year. I saw him last week and he’s in a cervical collar and he’s convinced that if weren’t for his helmet, he wouldn’t be alive. This same guy found out the day after his crash that he’s expecting twins.

Glad to hear you are relatively ok with deminimus damge to you and the bike! I've hadthe experience of endo-ing while mountain biking resulting in a separated shoulder. Also knocked myself out. But for my helmet, the head strike would no doubt have been alot worse. Have you ever tried Second Skin bandages for the road rash? Made by Spenco. Halves the healing time for road rash with no scarring.

kajukembo

Sorry to hear about your accident but am glad you came through it so well!

I could not agree with you more about wearing a helmet. I went down hard last summer, broke my collar bone, needed surgery and had to have a plate put in. I can remember vividly slamming the side of my head into the ground twice before coming to a stop. I can’t imagine how much worse my injuries would have been like without my helmet.

Heal quickly
