Carbonframes "Onyx" MTB Frame
#2395 - 04/14/04 05:50 PM (62.104.220.68)

Hello, i´m a guy from germany and i bought a "carbonframes onyx" a few days ago at Ebay germany.

To be honest: i had no information about the frame, but i thought it looks cool and the price was very, very interesting and so i could not resist. I´m sure you guys know these sitiuation...

With a little help from a guy in a germen board i found out that carbonframes is the company before calkfee design and i hope someone knows something about this frame.

All the informtion i have is the picture below.

I would be happy if you guys can tell me something about my new love.

By the way, i think i would use Shimano XT components from the 730 to 735 Series to build this bike. Or is this a no-go?

Thx for your help.

Best reards, Jan

P.S.: Sorry for my bad english.

Jan:

I've never seen a CarbonFrames Onyx before! Very interesting.

Regarding whant type of components might work, I would suggest you e-mail Craig Calfee. It's his frame and he should know. craig@calfeedesign.com

Hi Dave,

thx for your answer. I wrote Craig a Mail yesterday, but i thought i should try the Board too.

After my first information research when i found nothing about the frame, i got an idea of how rare tzhis part is. Probably i should not drive it and put it on the wall.

But, hey... this thing is made for rides through the forests.

Probably i can make some pictures and post it here.

I found a Carbonframes "onyx" in San Francisco three years ago and purchased it because it was just so unique. The serial number indicates that it is #4, one of the prototypes. Last week I contacted Craig Calfee by e-mail and he confirmed that this bike "is very much a collector's item" and was one of ten or twelve mountainbikes he built in 1990. He also told me that it is equiped with an early Ritchie fork, and that the bottom bracket is bombproof and will last a lifetime. It rides on Mavic rims, has Magura hydraulic rear brakes, and full Shimano Deore XT hardware throughout. The only thing that I have added is a newer Deore XT parallel fulcrum "V" brake in the front. One thing that I've noticed about my frame and the one in the picture is that mine has the top tube, seat tube, and seat stays all connecting at one place, but the frame in the picture shows them connecting as a triangle. If anyone ever finds an Onyx bike or frame for sale at a reasonable price, buy it. It is one of the best rigid frames you will ever ride and will survive anything you can ride through, uphill, downhill, or flatland. It will not rust, corrode, bend, warp, or dent. I imagine that the only enemy it has is fire. Please don't hate me when I tell you that I bought mine for $200.

Hi Fitzroy, thx for your post.
I love this communications boards and the Internet. There is always someone who can help .

Don´t hate me too, when i tell you that i bought mine for 100€.

Where can i find the serial number? I was searching for it, but probably i was to blind?

Could you make a picture of your onyx? I would love to see one build up.

My bike will be equipped qith a complete XT from 730 to 735 series, but with Turner brake levers and gravity research pipe dream cantilever brakes. I do have a the XT Cantilever brake too, but i like this CNC stuff.
I will use amn alloy fiork from a small company in germany which is called "Juchem" and they build high end custom bikes. Wonderful work and ball burnished look.

On "regular" Calfee bikes, the serial number is on the inside of the rear dropouts.

Hmm, i searched for the Serial Number, but there is definitely no one.

Probabably no serial frame, because the picture from the catalogue defers in the framedesign. We will see.

I will take a photo of my Onyx and try to post it here. If you send me your e-mail I will send it to you there, my e-mail is fitzroy9911@yahoo.com . The serial number on mine is located on the rear dropout, derailer side, on the back edge, not on the inside. It reads "XA004". I live about 25 miles from Santa Cruz, California, where Craig Calfee has his shop, Calfee Designs, and soon I will take the bike there to have the seat post clamp replaced with a metal one. The original clamp will not clamp tight enough to keep the seat from moving on a hard ride. My fork assembly is steel and I would like to find a compatable carbon fibre fork to try. The steel fork seems to create a good balance, it doesn't make it feel front-heavy at all.

Thx for the pictures of your bike. I believe that probably there are not many Onyx build in the same way.

Hmm, the fork is a little problem. Probably i will iuse a Tange Switchblade first and will then look fpor another one. Also a OPace RC30 is a cool thing and there are some nice Titanium Forks, but they are hard to get and not cheap.

Carbon forks from the early 90s are very rare. There was an italian bike company called "C4" which build Carbon Monocoque frames with carbonfibre forks. Probably you can get one of them.

If you are not on the retro/classic trip you can use a Pace RC31. You can buy this fork with a 1"-Crown and Cantilever-Fixings. and i looks so cool.

Forks are easy to change, so I may try a variety and see what works best. I'm not interested in keeping the bike "retro" or original, but new stuff is just so expensive. Especially cabon fibre stuff, I recently saw a carbon drink holder that was $50. A lot of stuff I find on someone's old bike, they build a new one and take what they want off of the old one. This leaves a lot of good parts that they will sell cheap or give away. As long as my Onyx has air in the tires, shifts correctly, and brakes well I'm happy.

Cambria Bike has a 1 inch Kestrel Fork guaranteed for life for about $140 or $130 I forget which. I have it on my Luna although I paid more almost 3 years ago. It has a chro mo steerer. I really like their forks and it is a great value.
