Emma Incoming!
#24 - 12/19/03 03:55 AM (66.82.167.94)

Okay, so I don't know exactly when. MIne will be a 60cm with a 57.5 top tube in the "scripts" paint scheme, mostly orange. I've also got a Luigino coming with chromed lugs in "Legnano yellow." When I mentioned this paint to Dario he made a slew of inquiries in Italy since there is more than one Legnano-yellow, some more gold, some more yellow, some brighter, others more subtle. I'm aiming for a light, less than canary yellow with white panels. Does anyone else remember this bike? Have a look at bikespecialities.com for a beautiful picture of Mike' Barry's Legnano. Dario knew just what I meant---and what a swell guy. So, I've got two incoming and just swapped my 55cm Marcelo for a 60. If any one wants a smokin' deal on my 55cm stnd Marcelo (1cm extra ht extension), drop me a line. Gosh, I love Pegorettis.

Apologies to Jeff. foothillbiker got this correct. You'll be able to see there Mike's Legnano. Should you ever visit Toronto a visit to Mike's shop is a must: he has way more than 100 bicycles including very old hobby horse and bone shakers and safeties, but also a Fausto Bianchi and a whole slew of amazing classics. No human knows more about bicycles than the genteel and self-effacing Mr Barry. His own Mariposas are among the most craft-beautiful bicycles made today.
Dario would love these bikes, 'cause that Dario knows a thing or two himself.

Emma's big legs and Luigino's chromed head tube make winter longer...

There's certainly something very beautiful about those old bikes with single chainrings and that minimalist shifting on the seatstays. The very thin tubes used on the forks and stays add to the aesthetic. When I was looking for the Legnano, I saw the 1952 Lugano as well. I don't know about vintage bikes but that is, at least to my eye, a beautiful bike as well.

douglas--

have been riding my fina now for about a month, weather permitting. man, what an amazing bike. despite all that folks say about aluminum, the fina is smooooooth. honestly, less road buzz than some steel frames. and does it scoot! takes very little torque to get it going. very happy with it. your description of the fina was right on.

my custom marcelo -- custom geo and paint -- should arrive soon (i hope). dario and i exchanged many e-mails. incredibly nice guy. i suggested two paint schemes and left final choice to dario, so a suprise awaits me.

thanks for your recommendations.

james.

It's true, the Fina rides like no other aluminum bike I have ever tried. It's just amazingly smooth and calm.

I just "traded" my Marcelo as it were. My pal and I got matching bikes, both white bici paint; mine the 55 with ht extension, his a 60. He was done with his 60 so I bought that and sold my 55 to a dear pal. I finished up the build on the larger Marcelo and the whole thing makes so much more sense this way. I'm glad that my incoming Emma and Luigino are both going to be 60s with 58 top tubes.

Today was warm, nearly 55 degrees, but the roads were a wet, sandy, gavel-laden mess, so I took the Moots.

I just got the kindest note from Dario. I did my best to write in Italian and he was so, so nice about it. Such a kind and decent guy. His English is far, far better than my Italian will ever be.

I'd like to add an 8:30am in Jaco colors next but there is already too much on the plate. Waaaaaay too much.

I also bought a Fina a few months back based upon dbrk's review. I couldn't believe how fast and stable it was going both uphill and downhill (rare to find one that does both well). I also yearned for a steel pegoretti. While I wanted a Marcelo, last month I couldn't pass up a deal on a nos 2002 Palosanto from a lbs going out of business (unfortunately). Have yet to build it up but can't wait.

slowgoing--i'm jonzing like mad for my marcelo to arrive. during my e-mail exchanges with dario, i asked for a bit more flex in the marcelo than the fina. so dario spec'ed a small diameter TT and either a smaller diameter ST or DT (can't remember which.) and came up with custom geo numbers close to my serotta's. given how sweet the fina is, a bit more flex in the marcelo might make it within shouting distance of nirvana. please tell me how your new steed rides. i'll do the same. hopefully, my mid-90s merckx ML leader off of eBay will arrive at nearly the same time. it will be so cool to ride all the steels -- CIII, my kirks, the peg and the eddy -- and feel their personalities. damn, bikes are fun.

Climb: Finally built up the Palosanto. NOS 2002 model. On sale for $500 including steel fork. It built up very nicely, although everything had to be chased beforehand -- the thing was covered in paint, including the hole in the derailleur hanger. It rides just like the Fina - very efficient, great handling going both uphill and down, with just a tad bit more dampening on the big hits. I can see why they call it their long distance frame. It was extremely comfortable. I absolutely love it.
