Calfee Frames from La Bicicletta?
#2406 - 04/15/04 12:37 AM (24.34.152.94)

$99 off MSRP, and you only have to wait 6 weeks (for some frames)!!

Seems an odd choice for Calfee to sell through that outlet, given the "high-touch" component of their reputation. What do you think?

BTW - That C-50 price is nice too - $500 off.

I too saw that awhile back. As with every company, growth and profit are the main aspects of business. What better way to do it than have someone sell you product for you. I won't be surprise in the future if I see more distributors for Calfee frames...it's just a part of business and marketing.
You could definately get a better deal than that...I know I did....way more than that!!!!

Will share with us your bike's configuration, and where and what kind of deal you got on it?

Got my Tetra Pro and Alpha Q sub 3 fork for 20% off MSRP (can't say exactly unless I find out its OK with the dealer...don't want to sever my relationship with them).

My bike/configuration is the nude Tetra that was just submitted in the photo gallery. I got a little lucky on the parts because I bartered with the owner of a different shop and got the parts for cheap.

I remember other shops I called where they could even throw in a free fork. There are deals out there, you just got to look.

One thing to consider: LaBicicletta is located on the U.S./Canadian border. They can import things from Europe that we don't normally see in the States. Conversely, I'm sure they can sell U.S. products that are hard to obtain through normal Canadian channels. Also, with a weak dollar vs. strong Canadian currency, the Calfee may well be a bargain for LaBicicletta's Canadian and Euro customers.

Just my $.01,
Rod

I look today and, hey, the discount if just about gone! I wonder who else reads this forum. Maybe I deserve a custom Tetra for the alert I have a custom CF and paint scheme in mind, but I'm debating Parlee vs. Calfee vs. Crumpton vs. C-50.

1Centaur - so you are considering a Crumpton? Would be nice....I don't think you can beat the price for a quality carbon frame & fork. I am still experimenting w/ Calfee (in getting the customization right) but I hope to try out a Crumpton someday before its too late.

Good luck,

I have had some trouble getting a reply from Nick by e-mail (a message said he'd tried and it bounced), but I am intrigued - I like the wishbone seat stays and don't mind considering a rare CF builder. Price is good vs. Parlee but not that interesting vs. custom Tetra, which has greater heritage, but I have a stock Tetra and am looking for variety. If I get one, I'll post a comparison in ride quality to the Tetra (I guess this fall, if it happens)

Well, the Trek has a seatstay wishbone and heritage to boot....

Seriously, I know they are big which seems like a turnoff maybe, but they really do make a pretty sweet ride for the CF connoisseur. It's still one of my favorite rides of all time, though in certain ways my Tetra Pro is better. Of course that's in comparison to a '97 OCLV. I haven't ridden a new one. Trek even have some pretty cool non-postal paint jobs now. All I'm saying is, if you're really looking for another CF bike, don't just discount them without trying one.

I test rode a 5200 in 2002 before picking the Tetra. The 5200 was a very nice bike, predictable, stable, comfortable - I test rode it for 75 miles becuase it was so comfortable. The Tetra by comparison had a lively feeling to it, a spirited feeling, without detracting from carbon comfort. I felt that buying the Trek was like kissing your sister; the Tetra was like finding an intelligent and nice and unpretentious supermodel who really liked me

As for Project One paint jobs - WAY overpriced and not very interesting. If the Trek factory is turning out one of 10 paint schemes on a repeated basis, it should not cost more than a one of a kind paint scheme from an artist. I was told recently by a high end dealer that also carries Trek that they have sent OCLVs to Joe Bell to be custom painted. That holds some appeal - an LBS owner at another forum who carries Treks wonders if that would void the warranty. I sometimes scan the OCLVs on eBay thinking I could get one of the ugly postal schemes from a few years ago for a song and re-paint it - they don't tend to turn up in my size at low prices though.

OK, you certainly have valid points. I think sometimes people dismiss Trek, Cannondale etc without even a thought and then go searching/buying sonething with much less proven technology, mainly because it isn't mass produced. Which is OK. But they might be overlooking a really good bike in the process. At least you can say you tried it first.

I agree that most of the Project One paint jobs I don't like either, but I do like this one:

We agree on that one too - I liked it the best of all of them.

OCLV new [Re: 1centaur]
#2492 - 04/19/04 04:54 PM (198.69.219.131)

I've thought for years if Trek was smart they would "badge" their bikes OCLV in the same manner that Ford marketed the Thunderbird and Mustang.

It is interesting that this Project One paint jobs look more like a normal paint job.

On the paint jobs, I think they show what would be a high degree of difficulty - if they were one time jobs. However, on an assembly line basis, I'm guessing it's sort of like paint by numbers - "just paint in the outlines Fred." Moreover, to my eye a lot of them simply lack taste and understanding of what richer bike buyers want - individualism, coolness, nothing others make fun of, interesting color choices. I rarely see one-time paint jobs posted here in the picture index that look so wild and irreverent of the money spent and seriousness of the sport pursued. It's like a 24-year-old picked the paint schemes in 20 minutes after a night of Las Vegas fun, while the 40+ buyers just say "huh?" And "how much?" Teenage drivers think generic flames painted on their cars are cool. Does anybody else? (Italian flag flames per the recent Parlee thread are, of course, completely different
