Luna Stiff Enough got big Rider?
#2446 - 04/16/04 11:44 PM (66.219.219.89)

I just got back from my fitting with my LBS Calfee dealer. He recommends a 64cm Tetra. He also claimed that in the in the larger sizes the Lunas weren't as stiff as the Tetra. I hadn't heard that before. In fact... I thought the general feeling was that if you didn't know what you were riding, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Stiffness is a factor for me... I weight 270lbs. I was planning on a Luna but now have second thoughts.

I emailed Calfee about this issue a few days ago, but I haven't heard from them. Anyone in a similar situation? Do I need to spend $800 more?

Any advice would be appreciated.

My understanding is that Calfee can make any model to the required stiffness by adding extrastiff tubes.

ALL the bikes share the same rear tubeset,so the dirrence is in the three main tubes and lugs.I've even heard of a Luna with a wrapped BB shell,so don't worry. No need to spend more than the Luna.

There is a place on the order form to note things like weight and size/stiffness concerns.

I was considering the Luna, but I think the cost of the Luna with the extra stiffness there is an upcharge. With the Tetra Pro the extra stiffness tubing is part of the original cost in the larger sizes. I chose the Tetra pro which enable me to get a 60cm with 2cm added to the head tube without an extra charge. I think the turn around time for a Tetra is a lot faster than the Luna also. I absolutely have no regrets with my decision. I am 6'4 and between 215 and 230. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good Luck,
KYCALFEE

I wasn't aware of the wait time difference. But in my factory tour last January I learned that the Tetra's are made on one side of the shop and the D-Fly's and Lunas on the other. Lugged on one side, wrapped on the other. Looked at the Tetra ovens, new D-Fly lugs, Rolls of carbon fiber, just waiting for resin....in 3 different weights and thicknesses. Tetra Tetra's, Stilletto's, lots of painted Calfees (way more variety than you ever see posted on the photo gallery). Pretty fun tour. It does not take long but is informative and you'll never forget it.

Love too take that tour. Sounds like fun. Like other posters have mentioned, I have read that Calfee will construct the bike for your needs. Good Luck

All frames get "extra stiffness" new [Re: easypedaler]
#2459 - 04/17/04 02:16 PM (67.21.68.131)

At 60cm and bigger. All frames incur an upcharge for "superstiff" of $95.I recently discussed this with Calfee and they told me all 3 models are designed to be the same stiffness at each size.

If you are gonna crash it,the Tetra is the easiest (cheapest?) to repair.I decided I wasn't gonna crash mine so I got the Luna:)

You can get more options like extensions and paint on a Tetra or Dragonfly at no charge. But if you just want a basic bike the Luna smokes.

Call and talk with them. As everyone said he will build it just the way you want it.

I have a 6'3" friend, 250 at least on a Luna. I think he got stiffer tubing. You need to call and talk to Dean or Craig. They really are not that hard to get after a few tries. I'd suggest early or late when fewer people call. I'm in sales and everybody seems to call at 10 and 2.

Take care.

I am also a big guy. 6"5" @ 220 lbs.

I went to Sundance Cycles in Agoura Ca. and got fit for a Luna. I was used to riding a Cannondale and liked and hated the stiffness. I told them that I did not want a bike that flexed and if it did change gears or brake rubbed when I stand and hammer, that they would get the bike returned. I was skeptical. I received my 66 cm Luna and was impressed that it did not look like a "tall bike" because the way they make the gussets. The ride is the best thing. It is like you are riding on a carpet, but with all the stiffness that you want when you stand. I only wish I would have done this sooner. Great frame and dealership. I finally feel at one with a road bike.

Greg

Greg,

That's a great story. Congratulations and welcome to the family of Calfee owners. I feel the same way about my Tetra. I been in Sundance Cycles several times, it's a very good shop, excellent choice. I got mine from Edge Cycles in Laguna Hills, Ca., it's the same quality of shop Sundance is, just much closer to my home. Thanks again for the story, and welcome aboard.

Thanks for all the advice. I did call Calfee, and they confirmed that all three models are built to the same stiffness. The larger sizes use a stiffer tube with the addition of a stiffener in the bottom bracket.

They said since I was a spinner not a pedal masher, the stock 62 or 64 would work fine... especially since my weight continues to come off. But anything compared to what I've been riding (an old Trek bonded Alu frame from the late 80s) is going to seem plenty stiff!

I'll be placing my Luna Pro order tomorrow. Now the big question you all have faced... what color? I thought I had decided on translucent red, But then the thought of nude with dark decals with black Hugi hubs, black spokes, black open pros, black FSA bars, stem, seat post and compact cranks, and black HB tape came to mind. I'd call it my F-117A Luna Pro. It would contrast nicely with my pastey white skin!

Whatta y'all think?

Oops! I see Trikobi already has that look! Just saw the pic in the Gallery. Nice!

Check out page 7 of the forum "Dark Decals" below is what Stella wrote. I have the dark decals on a clearcoat and personally think it looks great, I hope to finally post some pictures in the next couple of days.

"Hey remember, the dark decals were not meant for nude.
They might not hold up without a clearcoat on top.
There are people out there that have chosen this option and really like it. Or, you can do dark decals with clear. Looks spiffy also!!!

Color new [Re: BikerDoug]
#2518 - 04/21/04 09:21 PM (24.50.168.232)

My Luna was originally Cabernet Red. It is translucent and a burgundy.

When I had it refinished I went clear. I prefer that. I feel it shows off the lugs and carbon fiber more. The Cabernet Red had to be in really bright light to see through to the carbon well.

I like your idea. I think it will look very nice.

I went with a cabernet red fade to a translucent cabernet red, which is a interesting paint scheme. However the day my bike came in, I met another guy at my LBS getting a Luna with a translucent red paint job. The paint job was stunting in the way it picked up the sunlight, something you don't see everyday. They are all nice schemes, you can't go wrong, have fun.
