alter egos an arguin with mahself here. Too bad Live Steam actually registered a few weeks ago. I could make me up a pretty fair Live Steam imitator and really stir it up.

Hmmm ...

Note to all...when Ed hits the hooch, he types new [Re: OldEd]
#2640 - 04/29/04 01:47 PM (67.35.3.247)

with an accent. On that note, I'm glad he's from the genteel south. If he was a full-on Central Floridian or Lower Alabamian, he'd be downright incomprehensible.

Take heart Ed. The issue here isn't one of lack of discussion; rather, it's a decided lack of irrational, counterproductive banter...as has apparently taken over RBR. But, Doug sure is cute with his demands/claims that others are doing that which he too participates in. Frankly (and particularly here), I'd rather hear/read about his single speed exploits. That's much more interesting, germane, sick and, quite honestly, relieving given the horridly depressing nature of world news.

...That and the bikes pictures on this board are far more intriguing than those on RBR. Is RBR dead? I doubt it...just stale and in need of some reinvi-gi-mo'-rating.

Break. New off topic: Shimano? What the shyt? Raw materiel shortages? Price fixing? Early termination of 9spd components? Talk about an evil empire.... I was at the South Florida Bass Outdoor World last night drooling over fly rigs, and I noticed no shortage of fresh and/or salt water Shimano reels. That division of the East Asian Component Borg doesn't appear to be suffering at least....

Resistance is futile. new [Re: sn69]

I dunno, man, I've bought some Shimano components in the past couple of months and didn't have any difficulty. I've heard about this supposed shortage but haven't seen any evidence of it. How does it manifest?

See, 10:30 in the morning and I'm using standard English like a Yankee. I'll swing by about 5:15 this afternoon though and give you a good dose of The Drawl.

I'm patiently waiting new [Re: OldEd]
#2644 - 04/29/04 03:14 PM (67.35.3.247)

for SRAM, Truvativ or FSA to introduce QUALITY shitfer/brake alternatives to Campy and Shimano. It'll happen...sooner or later (Modolo's catastrophes not withstanding).

Incidentally, while I was in Savannah this past week, we stayed at a supposedly haunted hotel that was once a hospital for Union soldiers. The ghost that still lives there is that of a Federal blue coat. My wife asked if I was nervous. I told her that I wasn't because he--the ghost--was from the CORRECT SIDE...even if he was an Army pogue.

Now, had we been dealing with a Graycoat, then I'd have had issues and such.

Were the Modolos really catastrophes? new [Re: sn69]
#2646 - 04/29/04 04:21 PM (162.114.211.143)

I've never even seen a pair in person, let alone used them. They look a little ugly and chunky in pictures, though.

The excellent/perfect shifters you're patiently waiting for have already been invented and gone out of production, but your stubborn generosity caused a rare set to slip through your hands. Luckily, they're bolted right up there snug against my black Dia-Comp gum hoods and gittin (sorry, ONE drink with lunch) me around the backroads here just fine.

Seriously, some version of the old Suntour Command Shifters (the wingnut-looking deals) seems to me the ultimate in brake-shift levering. A little tinkering with the ergonomics (you need big strong fingers to operate them efficiently) and you'd have some simple, repairable, UNDERSTANDABLE $40 shifters that would outperform anything Campy or The Borg could throw at it.

#2655 - 04/29/04 11:07 PM (67.35.3.247)

You know, I've never personally used them, but I've heard that they were (are) simply horrid. Odd,...I don't think that Modolo's stuff is particularly bad, and I regard their old Xtenos bars as precursors to Easton's current shape.

I agree--those Suntour shifters are cool. Then again, you and I share the love that dare not speak its name...at least not on cycling boards beset with tepid arguments about the merits of Shimano and Campy. Suntour...where for are thou?

I'm wondering if those Kelly Takeoffs wouldn't work with bar end shifters as long as one uses downtube pods. For that matter, I still like downtube shifters. I am at least glad that The Far East Borg elected to include them in the new 10spd gruppo. Now...if only Campy would get back to basics. Lickton's still has a small supply of Campy 8/9 spd downtubes, but damn...they're expensive.

...check out this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3674384998. (Just don't even think about bidding against me...) These things look like they could have been the original, twisted basis for the Take Offs, and as you can see, they do indeed allow thumbies. ...or you could always shell out $55 (ouch!) and get the Thumbies from Paul Components (supply yer own barcons! ouch!). I'm running a set on one of my 'cross bikes, and it is a kick to have 9-sp thumbshifters...

Imitating Steam wouldn't be that hard new [Re: OldEd]
#2693 - 05/03/04 04:16 PM (208.224.3.155)

Mostly what he does is post articles from a website, some of them pretty wacky, that agree with whatever point he happens to be making. If you disagree with him he gets sarcastic. The one I worry about is Bill105 who i think is just plain nutty. I tried to have a normal give and take with him and got no where. And I'm a conservative (mostly, kinda) for crissakes! Even Doug is sounding more like those two. I decided to stop wasting my time there.

Wasn't there a guy on www.cyclingforum.com that actually did sign up as two different folks and he would agree with himself? I think that was "the true concerned citizen". Somebody caught him at it.

By the way, President Bush is going to be in town today. Didn't get tickets to see him though. I hope it's interesting.

I'll vote for whatever candidate vows to keep Shimano out of the U.S. market until they acknowledge and atone for their grievous moral failing in creating 9- and especially 10-sp drivetrains, part of said atonement being the return of thumbshifters, including a new road version.

I haven't decided about Biopace yet....

Ed and I have a pact that, should either one of us win the lotto (of course, we'd have to actually PLAY the lotto to win it, but let's not get bogged down in details), that we'll go into business together with Grant as our consultant in order to resurrect the Suntour of their last years before they went supernova.

Join us, Good Sir Walrus, and long live Superbe Pro.

Hey guys anyone intersted in a Superbe Pro Bike? Black Superbe Pro no less. It is very rare. Shifts like a dream. I need some money and I'd love to find a home where she is appreciated for her virtues. Most people don't even know it is. By the way I just saw a Superbe Pro Chain on eBay to put back on her. How fitting.

Let me know.

Superbe Pro Bike new [Re: sn69]
#2730 - 05/04/04 06:08 PM (24.50.168.232)

It is either a 56 or 54. I bought it used. It fits me and I'm between 5'9" and 5'10". If fits me fine.

It is a 89 Cannondale 3.0 that was a custom build. I bought it from the shop where the original owner dealt. He had I think 8 bikes so the miles on it are low. (I have 5 bikes.) It is friction downtube and the RD,FD,Crank, and brake levers are Superbe Pro. The brakes are Gran Coupe which I'm told was Campy Record renamed for that company. The wheels are not that old and are Mavic Open 4 CD's with Dura Ace Hubs and aero/elliptical spokes.

If you are interested I'll take some pictures. It is extremely fast. Every last effort is transferred to the frame. It is very stiff.

It is all black. It was done up to resemble the Black Lighting at the time but with high end components.

Stay Drunk new [Re: sn69]

Stay drunk I need the money!

It is on the large size for me but I was always very comfortable on it. It is a beautiful bike.

I forgot the seat is the Selle San Marco with the rivets. I forget the name. It is still among the top 10 the pros ride. (Velonews just had a list. Most of the new light seats were nowhere to be found. It was interesting.)

Just don't join AA.

Amen, brother! Preach it! new [Re: sn69]
#2737 - 05/04/04 10:02 PM (68.210.149.252)

Although I'm not a snob like young Scott. As someone who actually lived the SunTour era, I find Cyclone to be just fine. Superbe Pro is over my head, actually. It would take Lance to do it justice.

PS: I oppose lottos on principle. A tax on hope, aimed at blacks and poor rednecks. My biggest political battle, in fact, was in 1989, when then-Gov candidate Wallace Wilkinson brought in James Carville to help him get elected on a lottery platform, and I worked for a candidate who opposed it as -- you guessed it -- a "regressive tax on hope." We got our asses whipped and James went on the be famous. And here I sit --

Good point, having lived in a Powerball state new [Re: The_Walrus]
#2746 - 05/05/04 02:59 AM (24.52.154.101)

prior to returning to the land of Santa Anas, Santa Anita and the Governator. Powerball gets huge indeed, perhaps enticing more to buy into the tax on hope(lessness).

Personally, I'll take marginal solice in my San Diego lotto day-dreaming of buying that killer sea-view pad in Cardiff and my fantasy stable of Sevens, Vanillas, Serottas, Kirks and Yaquis. But again...I'd actually have to play the goofy thing first.....

#2753 - 05/05/04 06:51 PM (138.163.0.43)

We're pretty close to one another. I'm in Carlsbad, although as my wife and I like to say: Carl is good...very good.

Nope, I haven't had the pleasure yet of riding with any of the RBRers. I've only been back in town since late summer, the first part of which was spent getting reacquainted with hills following our two year stint in New Orleans.

Currently, I'm only riding one or two days a week. My wife is on the board of directors for a local charity and she volunteered me to run in the Rock N Roll Marathon on their behalf. ...So I've been training for that, although not nearly enough.....

Everybody's seen Riv's roll-your-own barcons, hmm? new [Re: OldEd]
#2793 - 05/07/04 12:18 AM (63.150.56.105)

Pretty hard for me to track how this thread got from where it started to shifters, but if anybody's still conscious, Rivendell makes a set of bosses or mounts or whatever-the-hell that plug into your bar ends, then you mount your downtube shifters on 'em. Dirt cheap, about $20, and work with almost any levers. This won't be of any interest to people who don't LIKE barcons, but I do, and I have a boatload of old shifters around because I never throw anything away.
Also, while I have your attention: Hi, Ed. How's it going, and is there any hope?
