Chamois Lotion
#2733 - 05/04/04 06:30 PM (12.10.219.36)

Help me out here, who uses chamois lotion and what are the pros and cons.

Any recommendations on brands.

Thanks,

Like Lance I use Assos. Expensive but worth it in keeping sores away doing 8 hour rides.

I use Bodyglide on my body in the same area. I like it because it stays for the whole ride. I used a variety of products through the years.

I've never used Assos so I can't comment from personal experience. However if you are watching the Lance Chronicles last night it showed him using it. Next week we get Sheryl Crow's take on it.

No cons on any form of lubricant unless you are homophobic. There are all sorts of products and people find a favorite. I have run marathons and you need to lube. You are just a lot more comfortable.

A letter I wrote on the subject was in Bicycling a few years back. I will end this as I did then..."As I tell my friends, once you ride wet you'll never ride dry." Their commnent was they were not sure that they would share that in mixed company.

Body glide here! Lon stated things well on this subject. I teach Spin classes and it is a must for some...I especially use it during the speedwork classes.

Assos is probably scratching their heads why their phones are ringing off the hook from distributors calling in to fill backorders for the stuff. This following years of lackluster sales.

One episode of the Lance Chronicles showing the man slathering goo on his shorts and suddenly everyone wants a jar too.

Come to think of it I'm running a little low.

It's a dessert topping too!

A supposed true story: The Sound Cyclist's "Bloomin Metric" offers lotsa swag during the event's morning registration and amongst the t-shirt and flyers handed out is a small tube of "Butt-er creme" (I think it's called). Well, someone told me this poor chap thought the stuff was some sort of energy goo and mid-ride lubricated himself. I mean: he ate it!

At least he won't be suffering chapped lips.

I’ve use them all and my conclusion is that cheap old A&D ointment works as well as any of them. Some people comment that some of the various lotions/creams/ointment out there can play havoc with your chamois but to date I have noticed any significant damage.

I now stick with A&D for after the ride if needed. I used it for years and because of Bodyglide being water and sweatproof it lasts for the whole ride. A & D used to start to wear off on really long rides.

I used a topical balm for the last 9 years, called MelaGel. It works very well, I have never had any irritations or sores since I started using it. I order it from the melaleuca.com website.
