#2786 - 05/06/04 03:46 PM (24.126.1.33)

Hi,

Im interetsed in hearing what everyone has to say about the Elium, both the Ti and the steel version.

I am interested in purchasing one, maybe.

Thank you all in advance,

Steve

Personally, I wonder how it improves on the Odonata. Haven't ridden either, though!

I have the Ti Odonata and have not regretted the purchase. If you worry about scratching the carbon fiber tubes during cleaning, the Elium and Odonata may not be the bike for you. If you race and worry about crashing, well... you get the point.

4 years in the streets in and around NYC, the Odonata has not once been an issue for me. This includes year round riding: rain, snow, potholes, sub zero temps etc. :-) Although it would be nice if carbon fiber had the durability of Ti...

During my visit to the factory a few weeks ago, I saw several Eliums in various stages of build. All Ti from what I remember. Seems to be popular.

That's all I can say.

I own an Odonata and love it. The Elium has an extra carbon section, if you need more carbon to lighten up the bike why not just buy an all carbon bike....

The seat stays and seat tube are just enough to lighten up the bike and take away some of the road buzz.

A state-of-the-art bike that has few peers. It has a perfect blend of power output, smoothness and performance. I sold a Serotta Ottrott because I liked my Elium better. You won't be sorry.

I have my Elium for a month now with 700 miles on it..
I am loving it Upgraded from an ALARIS.. Took a few days to get used to the much lighter machine, but after that is has been really smooth.. handles like a dream, on climbs and even sprints.

You will not be sorry.

An alaris frame goes about 3.2 lbs for a medium frame and an elium anout 2.6 lbs. Your talking about a whopping 10 ounce difference, almost nothing in the big scheme of things. A fifth of a waterbottle would account for that difference in weight. Assuming you put the same components on the elium as the alaris the complete bike would be about a measly 10 ounces less. That took a few days to get used to? Once again minimal weight savings being hyped to the max.

Yes the weight savings is being hyped. and YES I notice the difference on the climbs.

Do we want to have an 8 cylinder engine when a 4 or 6 will do the same job? Sure, but heck if I could have a 12 cylinder I would take it in a second!

The point is there is not much difference after passing a certain level in anything. A lot is psychological after that point.

My Elium is better then my Alaris.. Why? because the frame is a half pound lighter, the components are all different, it handles different, and due to components choice not as fast on the flats, but a heck of lot faster on the uphill.

Both bikes now have as close a position set up as possible (frames are different geometry) and both are perfect bikes for me. If they both had the same frame geometry, same components, then you are right. the only difference is 1/2 a pound and a little softer ride due to the carbon tubing and different Ti tubing.

If you can afford either, then I still would go for the Elium. If given a choice of an Elium with standard components or an Alaris with upgraded components, then my opinion is the Alaris. Of if you will be able to upgrade your components in a year or two, then go for the Elium.

Just my opinion.. I am no expert, but I do love my bikes.
