Anyone own a Team SC? new
#2810 - 05/08/04 02:33 AM (205.188.116.73)

Plenty of posts here but no mention of the SC. Supposed to be the most popular model from Merckx. I wonder how it compares to the Pegoretti Fina, also scandium. Any thoughts?

i own a fina, and i've test ridden a team sc. unfortunately i rode the sc awhile before owning the fina. so i wasn't consciously comparing them, but based on memories, i liked the sc a lot. i almost bought one. very smooth ride. scandium rides differently than other alu frames. i believe the fina is stiffer, mostly i think from dario using OS tubes. which is not to say that the sc is flexy, just that the fina is very stiff. giving it great acceleration. but not a harsh ride. out of the saddle, the fina flexes zero percent. i think the sc might have a bit more give. bigger or very strong riders might find the fina stands up to them better. for smaller, less powerful riders, an sc might be better, or at least a better match. i'm 5'11", 155. i use a pretty small % of the fina's capabilities. i love it, but its a bit overkill for me. i'm keeping my eyes open on ebay for an sc. scandium really makes a nice frame. depending on your size and riding style, the fina might be better suited for a sprinter, power guy (i've heard that eric zabel rides a repainted fina for early season training, or at least did.) while an sc might be better for a smaller rider, over varying terrain. i ain't no expert, but those are my personal riding impressions. just my .02. hope they help.

I must start off by saying that I certainly am not a qualified reviewer and in fact am only "worthy" of this bike due to my passion for cycling! I can only give you my impressions as a stand alone review since I have not been on a Fina.

I've been on this frame for approximately 4 1/2 months now and have concluded the Merckx Team SC is a fabulous frame.

My rig is built up using the 2003 Chorus groupo and pedals, Proton wheels, SI Flite saddle, Thomson post and, TTT Forgie bar and stem. I suspect she weighs in at about 17.5 lbs give or take a few ounces. I'm 6' 2" and weigh in at about 180 lbs.

The bike is certainly an all round performer. As I have stated many times now, "this is one smooth ride!". Doesn't seem to be harsh at all and in fact is very easy on the body, probably due to its geometry. The transfer of power from pedal to wheel is instant and direct with a nice rigid feel. The bike wants to take off and climb on its own when you get out of the saddle. I find this bike to be very comfortable and in fact it is even more comfortable than my old steel Benotto (maybe not a great comparism as they are not even close to being in the same class! ... oh well).

The frame is well built. Nice blend-ground welds under a first rate paint job.

As has been said by one Pro, "It's a very Belgian bike because it's built for riding on the cobbles".

I have no reservations recommending this ride to anyone!

Best of Luck

i got tired of waiting for a team sc to pop up on ebay. of course, patience isn't my forte. so i got a sloping sc in the orange/blue color scheme. switched a DA9 over to the new frame, and am running bontrager race x lite wheels. this is one great frame. surprisingly light. wants to go fast. climbs very well. a nice degree of smoothness--ok, not ti smooth, or nice steel smooth, but given how fast this puppy wants to go, the slight bit of road vibe that comes thru is very acceptable. a truly remarkable all-around bike. i can see how for the spring classics this would be a stellar choice. eddy really knows what he's doing.

I'm waiting for a Team SC to get here, with a sloping top tube as well. How do you like the sloping tube? Does it make any difference in tha handling, ride or feel? I've only ridden standard geometry and this will be my first sloped tube. Can't wait for my Team SC!
