I love my 5900, but am wondering how the Madone compares. One review I read mentioned that the Madone is a little less vertically compliant, i.e. harsher riding over the bumps. Anyone have any experience here?

I read the same thing in this months Bicycling Magazine. Their reviewers didn't seem too thrilled with the Madone, but I'd love to have a chance to try one out myself. Local bike shops here say they won't be seeing them until mid February. C'mon, anyone out there had a chance to actually ride one?

The Madone is an interesting concept by Trek although I don't understand why they needed to rush the design and manufacturing through in 7 months the way they did. Maybe Trek was just desperate to show off something new for the 2003 racing season. Certainly the Madone wasn't critical for Lance's success. From what I understand he still considers the 5900 his favorite bike for really tough mountain stages. The 5900 is a proven design while the Madone may take another season and some tweaking to work out any potential kinks. It will be interesting to see what USPS is riding and in which races & stages next season.
Still, I like the Madone and wouldn't mind owning one if it's anything close to the stability and handling of their 5000 series and from what I've heard so far, it is.

From a "need something to show" standpoint, Trek is making moves (custom paint options and new Madone styling) in the 5K series to compete with the more stylish and better finished Italian competition. And the Madone does look very cool, imho.
Interesting point about rushing the design through in 7 months. Anyone know what the typical design cycle is for high-end production bikes?

I just rode a Madone and a 5500 the other day in my quest for a new carbon bike.My LBS did not have a built up 5900 to ride. The rides were both very sweet. I would buy either of the bikes as you won't go wrong. The Madone is about 100 gms heavier than the 5900 and the Madone would not be ready until June at the earliest. The 5900 could arrive by March. I also am looking at a Calfee Tetra which is available now. All great bikes. Dave

Yeah, that's what they told me, that's why I chose to use the guy at airglow.

Yes Eric, I saw the custom paint jobs that are now available at the Trek website, and while they werent too bad with their colour options, the prices were steep for what you were getting. Interestingly though i will have to commend you for making the statement about the more stylish and better finished Italian products, id have to say that they put more heart and soul into what they make. Trek just cant get their foot in the door there with competing in any way against the Italian bike manufacturers, and they will not be able to do so for many many years to come, for an example of this just take a look at even the lowest model DeRosa frameset and you will instantly see it is worlds away from the dime a dozen Treks.
