Any Calfee's doing the Bloomin Metric?
#2905 - 05/13/04 12:50 AM (216.179.75.238)

The Bloomin Metric is coming up May 23rd. It starts from Westport CT, not far from NYC. Some great roads and riding. SCBC does a geat job supporting the ride, and it is a lot of fun.

Bloomin Metric

If any one is interested, we could get a Calfee group ride going, or maybe just get together at the start. It would be really neat to see 20 or 30 Calfees riding together for just a few miles at least.

Bruce:

I will be there but do not know my start time yet. I'll be riding with my usual group, Team 118, with whom I ended up doing a modified version of the WCC warm-up 100 on Saturday. It did get a bit warm by the time I got home at 12:30. I hope you had some sunscreen on.

I'll look for you in the parking lot on Sunday.

I'm there...

Not too sure what my departure time will be either, but there's always a chance at the end of the ride that we Calfee-ites can meet afterwards for a photo-op and bully some of those Seven and Serotta riders chowing down in the food line.

Keep positive thoughts for good weather!

Kevan:

My other bike is Seven O. But, since my Calfee is just a couple of months old and has DA10, while the Seven is DA9, I expect to be riding the Calfee.

Let's hope for good weather.

Looks like the Calfee bikes will be leaving at 8am. Make sure you get there early enought to register and get through all the swag lines before 8am. I am planning on getting there at 7:30.

I'll probably be on the road by 7:15, Bruce, in case I decide to try to do the 75K after the 100K. That would make it a legitimate warm-up for the WCC DC.

Hey Bruce!

It was fun riding with you and the others. What a hoot! I'm afraid we went too fast. Had we slowed down we would have enjoyed the event longer. Nahhh....I guess not.

Next year I just might have to camp out in order to avoid the cycling crush.

Sorry Super,

Both for the delay in responding and having no pix to offer here.

The Bloomin' is one of the worst kept secrets for the NY/CT area. The ride was what I've been telling others, "crazy-crowded", with I think over 3,000 participants. The parking area was jammed, but once we got out on the road things were pretty sweet. There is plenty of eye candy out there and some of them were bikes even (yuk..yuk!)

Riding was a bit technical for the first 25 miles with fast riders passing the slower riders on the left and cars trying to pass us on our left, basically forcing cars to drive on the wrong side of the road. Let's just say the few drivers that dared to leave their driveway soon hated us. The nicest part of the ride had to be just beyond the halfway point as we were rounding a reservoir. There had to be a crowd of some 30+ riders taking the road by storm. Always a bit ticklish, unknown riding talents surround you, jockeying your way around slow riders and avoiding being pushed into the oncoming lane. I'm here to tell you, me and my friends survived.

This is a pretty cool ride with great support, the problem is its popularity. Fortunately the same club offers the ride again in the Fall, under a different name (SHHHHH!!!!) and that hasn't yet been consumed. As for next Spring, I'm going to have to get up and hour earlier to get there before the crush. Umm... let me rephrase that...
