Bikes, Bourbon. political campaigns, or house new
#2804 - 05/08/04 12:15 AM (68.18.112.223)

renovations? You can't have it all.

Tell me, oh Board, what to give up? Lately it's been bikes (haven't been on one in two weeks) and I'm grumpy. Scott, Steam, others, get me back on the old steel maiden. Or tell me it's OK.

Rumsfeld is gone, gone, gone, by the way. I saw much worse in my war, but photos in full glory never made the newspapers, the TV and the Internet. What a freakin disaster.

Give up the politics and the house. Keep the bourban and the bikes.
I can't say, but I know what I'm talking about.

Geez, I'm ready to give up anything to do with politics, and take up bourbon. Or Tequila. Or something. I used to think I was a nice, moderately conservative guy. But what with this prisoner abuse thing unfolding, it makes me want to go far, far away from most anything political. And I'm ashamed. Plus my son is a recent new Marine and I'm wondering how this may reflect on him now, as member of the military.

I liked G.W. I thought he was a real, straight-ahead moral guy, unlike his immediate predecessor. Apparently Dubya's failing is in the surrounding himself with 'advisors' who are giving him some really bum advice. Or who aren't giving him any advice. He's in the middle of a huge political minefield because it appears no one has thought through this whole Iraq campaign thing. It looks to me like a Little Rascals movie about the old "let's put on a show kids and see what happens". (for those of you old enough to know who the Little Rascals are)

Maybe I'm just too old for all this excitement. I dunno.

Very negligent of me to not mention the tequila. My favorite weakness. Just MAKE SURE it says 100% agave on the bottle. Or waste your money. 100% Blue Agave even better.

I was on board with this Irag thing not because of WMD but because Sadam had stuck it to the UN (the world) for over 10yrs with his non-compliance. Someone had to stand up and deliver consequence. Also because of how he was treating his people. But then again that the world doesn't give a hoot about the same stuff in Africa is repugnant hypocrisy.

Anyway...I agree with you. But they mucked this up horribly. Monumentally under-estimated the resistance. Monumentally unprepared to run the place, no foreign service administrative paper pushers to keep it going, kicked out all the people who did know how to run the stuff. The WMD is seeming weak pretext now, after being told "have proof." It's too bad. But what to do? I want him out because of all his religious/moral/free speech stuff.

Religion and good Tequila, no bike content. new [Re: Nev]
#2818 - 05/08/04 04:01 PM (24.17.236.162)

Yeah, we did better at the end of WWII running two different countries with two different cultures, languages etc. than we've done with Iraq.

Y'know, I can't agree with you on the religious/moral/free speech stuff, but I can't disagree either. I think we need a direction, a moral compass and guidance. This comes largely from religion. Now religious extremists, whether in the guise of a fundamentalist cleric in the Middle East or Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell are very bad, so is the opposite, as in no religion whatsoever. This is where I fall as far as views, sort of in the middle, a moderate conservative.

BTW, my bottle of Patron Anejo, made from Weaber Tequilana Blue Agave is almost empty. I bought it at Costo.

Mark Allen, triathlete emeritus, once suffered new [Re: OldEd]
#2826 - 05/09/04 04:05 AM (24.52.154.101)

a similar problem, Ed. Beset with a marriage, a young son, a burgeoning career AND the constant desire to pursue his passion of triathlon, he found himself in a downward spiral of stressors, robbed of nature's relief-valve that his sport provided. But, by his own description, he missed the forest for the trees and failed to give due credit to the smaller, seemingly less profound workouts that, in effect, meant more--specifically, getting out of bed just a tad earlier or skipping lunch out in order to get a short run or quick spin on his bike (or surf, or swim, or meditate...whatever Mark Allen does). In any case, he said the small, physiological inconsequential work-outs proved to be of profound impact to his psyche...and that's what got him back on the road to victory in Kona in '95.

My point? Go spin. Even if it's just around the block. Go spin, Ed. Enjoy the feeling of human-powered liberation and the wind in your hair. You told me once that it is uphill just out your door. Throw the bike in the big ring and hammer up those hills, even if they're short. Once you're at the top, take a quick look around and then go back down and do it again. ...Even if it's only for 15-30 minutes. Go spin.

Oh, and while you're sippin' your Single Barrel, check out Ebay--there's loads of new Suntour stuff.

Best,
Scott

Ed Burke once said something like "a little bit done frequently is better than a lot done occassionaly."

And thanks to your wise, Zenlike advice new [Re: sn69]
#2913 - 05/13/04 12:31 PM (162.114.211.143)

the last three nights I have gone out to 'just spin,' and the 'just spinning' has taken hold nicely. Last night, intending nothing but to 'just spin' for a half hour, I unleashed it without plan or intent, and did 2 hours/6 hills almost like my old self. The hills (pretty stout ones around here in what's called The Knobs region of Kentucky) were easier than I feared -- can't say I climbed them stylishly (there was some weaving side to side, ho, ho) but no extravagant suffering either.

I feel almost like a (fat) cyclist again.

10 pounds soon to go, I suspect.

Thank you, Roshi Young Scott.

Sounds like my workout schedule lately. And I'm signed up to do a 500+ mile week long ride in late June! Gotta get more riding in.

Whatever you do, stay out of the Non-Cycling forum on RBR. It's gotten pretty ugly over there. Red Menace is starting a campaign for a new internal moderator for Non-Cycling after J's haiku shop shut down a rather nasty name-calling thread recently. The predictable neocon spin has already started on the Prison photos and the subsequent Nick Berg video. And if that isn't enough, I believe Bill105 has gone off his medication once again.

Bill105 off his medication is a scary thought. Whew.

Plus Js Haiku is shutting down threads and Red's leading the peasants in revolt, huh? Man. I may have to swoop in for a quick hit or two ...

We may have an opportunity here!
