What exactly is a "Nude" finish?
#2962 - 05/17/04 03:50 AM (66.219.216.66)

Is Calfee's nude finish...

1. no finish on the carbon frame at all.
2. something like a vinyl sealer coat.
3. very light coat of Clear.
4. very light coat of something else.

Thanks

The term "nude finish" is really a mismoner. There is no finish with nude, just raw carbon. I think people get confused with the word "finish" that it implies something is put over the carbon, which is not really the case.

Here is the text of an email from Calfee asking about the price of refinishing a bike with a clear finish to a nude finish.

"... to change from clear to nude would cost $250.00 for stripping, $75.00 for the nude decals & applying the nude finish plus $35.00 return ground UPS shipping/handling charge."

So, there is some type of nude finish. When they respond with more detail, I'll post it here.

A nude finish is exactly that, nothing. No finish, raw carbon. My Luna was nude, no finish and all carbon was exposed without anything on top. All the flaws were apparent, as were sanding marks and small voids in the carbon tubing. From a short distance it looks nice, but up close it is truly 'unfinished'.

As a side note, Calfee's reluctance to correct the deficiencies on my Luna was the reason I sold the bike. I was told one thing when I purchased the bike (new) and told quite something else when I wished it corrected as agreed.

As good a bikes as Calfees are (they are terrific, I've had three) I'll not have any more.

Dave, care to share your experiences or would you rather keep it off the board?

See my post in this thread: http://www.bikefanclub.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=calfee&Number=1924&Forum=,,,,All_Forums,,,,&Words=&Searchpage=3&Limit=25&Main=1921&Search=true&where=&Name=45&daterange=&newerval=&newertype=&olderval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post1924

It goes a little deeper than that, but it summarizes it in a nutshell. The person responsible is no longer at Calfee.

Here's the word from Calfee.

"The "Nude" finish is not sent bare carbon, we finish the frame by applying 303 aerospace protectant to give the tubes and lugs a finished look because bare carbon tubes after sanding have a dry unfinished feel, also the 303 protects the exposed glue on the small parts (cable guides, brake bridge, water bottle bosses & drop outs) from UV's, which can discolor the glue over time. The carbon fabric on the lugs & carbon tubes on the frame are unaffected by UV's. For more information on the 303 we use visit there web-site www.303-products.com"

So, nude is a "protectant" but not a "finish". Makes sense. Thanks to all those who chimed in.
