Iraqi Gov President assassination help Bush?
#2989 - 05/18/04 06:52 PM (199.89.234.122)

Does anyone else think that the assassination of Izzedine Salim help Bush and the war effort? I think it will, because I believe there is a widespread U.S. perception that the Iraqis are not sacrificing for their own freedom. Salim can be made a martyr and the new government, whatever that will be in 6 weeks, can be portrayed as fearless Patriots. Voters can rally behind that kind of imagery.

Probably hurts Bush instead new [Re: Continental]

The killing shows how out of control the situation is in Iraq, and rather than uniting the Iraqi people behind the US-approved structure, it widens the chasm between Iraqis and the puppet government. Better be safe than sorry, is their choice. Unless we figure out an effective response, why should any Iraqi put their faith and safety into the hands of the hated foreign occupant or their proxies?

If anything, what's happening today is similar to WWII France, where the Germans set up the Vichy government. It was ineffective and couldn't stop a resistance movement from developing and gaining popular support.

Bush made a historic boo-boo, and it's time to get out. For, as someone recently eloquently said, continued determination in the pursuit of folly is the indulgence of fools.

Gives him an excuse for June 30th new [Re: Continental]

FWIW, I disagree about your perception of the perception that Iraqis aren't sacrificing--I haven't heard that anywhere. Mostly I hear people either blindly supporting Bush or blindly opposing him, regardless of the facts or the latest news.
As for the assassination, though: Seems to me it gives him an out when things don't work out on June 30: "Well, we had it all set up, but then terrorists who hate freedom assassinated . . ."

I'd really like a poll done in Iraq on who wants a decent goverment and who wants utter chaos. Seems chaos is in power as usual.
