Hello, I am considering purchasing a Calfee Luna or Tetra Pro. I am interested in the stiffness of these frames and which would be better for me. I am 6'3" 200 lbs and somewhat of a masher. I noted on the Calfee website there is an option to stiffen up a frame when ordered for an additional fee. Any thoughts on what might be best? Cost is a bit of an issue (ie if I get the Tetra Pro I would have to spend less on components etc). Thanks for any help out there. Gimpy

Hi Gimpy,
I think the option is for really heavy riders, but i could be wrong. I'm 190 on a good day and wouldn't want my luna to be any stiffer than it already is. My friend has a tetra custom that I rode a couple of weeks ago, my opinion is that you can't really tell any difference between the two frames alone and that wheel, saddle, seatpost and stem choices will all effect the ride to a certain extent as well.

Gimpy: I'm 200# (+/-) and like to mash. My Luna has zero flex. Like BlastinBob said, the 'extra stiff' option is for bigger and stronger than you or I.

I'm 6'1" and about 180. I have a 60 cm. tetra pro with stock tubing. It's plenty stiff for me - but I'm no clydesdale. If I had a fixed budget I'd definitely go for the Luna Pro and get some nice wheels or something else. The .25 pound difference is practically meaningless if you're talking about a noticable difference on a given ride. What side of the bed you woke up on will have more of an impact on how fast you are than a quarter of a pound in the frame. I certainly don't regret my decision - but if I was in a more monetarily constrained situation then (as I am now) - I'd go for the Luna without a doubt.

I was in the same position and talked to Craig. He and everyone who has ridden both always say the same thing and that is you cannot tell the difference. He recommended the Luna to me. At the time he rode a Luna. The difference in cost is in large part due to the higher labor costs to wrap the lugs for the "smooth" look. Since the carbon is more dense on the Tetra you can use less and have the bike weigh less. I'd get the Luna again and go with the better parts. You will save money in the long run since you know you will want to eventually replace the parts you did not want with the ones you really wanted.
