Psychlo-X hardtail vs. IF Ti Planet Cross
#315 - 12/28/03 03:57 AM (68.80.176.250)

I'm trying to decide between an Independent Fabrication Ti Planet Cross and a Moots Psychlo-X hardtail. I plan to use the bike for road & gravel/dirt trail riding on weekends and 30-mile round trip commutes to work on road & bike trail. I don't have any intention to cross race (at least not at present). Both bikes are outstanding - any thoughts on which might be the better choice for my use? Thanks.

are you planning on custom or stock?

if stock, then the specs on their respective websites have some fit and handling implications...

1) the planet cross is a little more laid-back, with slightly slacker head and seat angles, so for a given fork rake the if will steer a little more like a mountain bike and for a given frame size, seat post and seat the if will offer the option to push your seat a little futher back behind the bottom bracket...
2) the planet cross has an inch or more of top tube compared to the moots, so for a given desired seat-to-bar "cockpit length" the if will have a shorter stem and once again steer a little tamer...
3) moots doesn't list a bb drop, only the hard-to-use bb height, so hard to compare here, but if you find out, note that according to the rivendell reader a lower bb drop makes the steering tamer...

if you're going custom, then either company can build a bike to fit your needs, and 2 areas of concern are

1) whose custom process works better for you -- if you want to be very involved in low-level design decisions or if you prefer to let the builder take your needs and lbs-fit metrics and build your dream bike -- either way, ask your lbs some questions about the process and talk to the sales guys from the builders about your needs. for the kind of cash you're looking to pay, you need to like the process and feel good about the service...

2) which bike shoots more adrenaline into your veins--for me, moots wins big here; the psychlo-x craftsmanship is very high level; look frames from both manufacturers over carefully--look at the welds, the finish, the design details like the breezer dropouts and the cc engravings, and see if you don't agree...
