Tetra Pro Fun and Funny
#3162 - 05/29/04 02:02 AM (66.190.177.248)

Since the board has been a bit slow lately I thought I would try to give it a boost. I just completed my 2nd Tri of the season. Memphis in May Triathlon was a great race, over 1700 racers, 90 degree heat, 15 to 20 MPH winds, 83 degree water temperatures. The unseasonably hot weather and the wind made for some interesting racing. Now for the problem with my new Tetra, I hammered the flat bike course the best I could, fighting into the wind 14 of the 24 miles. I managed to average just under 20 MPH which for me is fantastic considering the wind. The bike is a dream it handles flawless and makes you feel guilty for holding back. Upon completing the bike course I realized that I had a 6 mile run left. Woops forgot about that. I managed to run a blistering 12 minute mile after that run. I know the real problem is that I am not in good enough shape, but last year I would have known better to go at a pace beyond my abilities on the bike. So now I am training to be worthy of my Tetra.

Are you worthy of your Calfee?

Funny how that works...I just was invited to go for a trail run with a new friend who is a much better rider and runner than I am. I was convinced by him that it would be easy for me since I am in great shape and pretty fast on the bike. So I gave in, and with a swollen cranium, I ran. Thank god he was running a "mild recovery pace" because after the 6th mile or so, my knees were on fire, my calves were cramping, and I was coughing cobwebs out of my lungs so I couldn't breathe so well...and I still had the one and a half mile downhill section left to get home...oh my poor knees! What is gods good name was I thinking? He did finally tell me that he was surprised I hung on so long and that he truthfully did not run as slow of a pace as he inteded. Gee thanks!!! The past two days I walk like a 80 year old man with a walker, popping Soma's like candy and angry at myself for the self-inflicted abuse.

Lesson learned...I need to train to run, even if I am fast on the bike, which I am not, I just don't have much competition here!!!

...Mark

A few years back I decided to do a bike ride the day before a 5 K I was running. The weather forecast was rain the day of the run and clear on the day before. Well I ended up doing about 47 of the 50 miles in the rain, so much for weather forecasts.

The next day dawned beautiful and sunny of course. I then found out how much a bike ride can take out of you. I never ran such a long 5 K in my life! Plus it was in a park that was all up mostly and down some. Agony and the slowest 5 K of all time. It is wonderful to set some PB's but not the slowest one!

Then to make matters worse the day was fantastic and I had nothing left in me to enjoy it.

More updates and opportunities for everyone to poke fun and share in my idiocy. So training continued this weekend. I was 1 1/2 into my ride when I hit a wet spot or just spazzed out and off the road and into the gravel I went. Before I could react I was on my back sliding down the highway. Fortunately no cars were coming at the time. My first thought was not is my head still attached, or am I o.k., but oh #$@$ my baby. The only damage appears to be a front wheel out of true. I have been riding for 5 years now and this was my first major fall. Outside of the standard,"You gotta get back on that bike", any suggestions for regaining your confidence. I won't have any problems riding again without traffic, but how about gaining confidence in traffic again. I am determined to not let this spill slow me down. I guess these things are bound to happen. For everyone on the forum who will now for every be scared of riding with me I say:
"I am excellent driver, slow in the driveway"
"be afraid be very afraid"

Maybe this will sparks some fun on the forum.
Enjoy

Since I have had getting a Calfee in my mind for quite a few months I have been lurking on this site. I had lost my job a couple of months ago but am lucky now becaue I'm starting a new job. The thought of getting a Calfee is not coming toward the top of my long term priority stack.

KYCalfee do no feel bad. We all crash now and again. My most recent crash was full of irony. I had been on a slow ride, staying with my wife. We are on different planes so staying with her is a very slow ride for me. We had done our trail ride and were heading back home on back streets. I was next to her, on the inside. The gutter on the side has a shallow slow down then slopes up and curves into the sidewalk. One can easily ride up and down along these gentle slopes designed as water channels when it rains.

A car was coming behind us, so I moved a bit closer to the curb. There was a wet spot from an errant sprinkler just before a driveway that spanned across the curbing with a drain pipe under it. When my front wheel hit the wet spot it immediately side-slipped. This was just a couple of feet in front of the drain, which I slammed into. I was thrown onto my left side.

My handlebars had been twisted to nearly parallel with the front wheel and the wheel itself was bent so badly that I could not open the brakes up enough to allow the wheel to spin without binding against both sides of the brakes. I made a careful inspection and determined the fork had no damage and the bars slipped as they should have because I am a firm believer in "tight enough," on adjusting bolts and such.

I had to replace the wheel since the rim was too bent to keep it's strenth if bent back into shape, if it could be bent back successfully. My body was mainly just bruised on the knees and shoulder. This was a low-speed crash. This was one of those times when I was surprised that the bike was worse off than my body.

At the end of May I wrote my post about my low-speed crash. Now February 14th,2005 and I'm posting in this thread again.

The first time I was just relating a crash I had. This time I can say that I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of my Tetra Custom Pro which should arrive at the end of March, beginning of April. I am now thinking that I don't want to crash on my new Calfee when I start riding it. Go figure.

Anyway you put it, crashing sucks, plain and simple, but especially on a new bike. At least a Calfee is very repairable, so if you do take a nasty digger and she takes it hard, you can have her looking near new again! That is a comforting thought for me as I look forward to 2 new Calfees coming to my home soon!
