Has anybody noticed that John Kerry (who does actually ride a bike quite a bit) has changed his riding outfit from hideously uncoordinated lycra-based clothing (which is the trademark of all cyclists in the 45-65 age demographic), to flappy t-shirt and baggy shorts? I can't decide which outfit makes him look like more of a tool.
But the question, for the politicos among us, is: is this change of wardrobe a calculated move to avoid looking like a lycra-clad doofus to middle America? If you were trying to suck up to 260M Americans, would you go with the flappy t-shirt?
These are the important things in a campaign...

Kerry could don the San Diego Chicken outfit to ride his bike and still look like less of a "tool" than that embarrassing moron GWB wearing a $2500 business suit and necktie.

"President Bush's bike accident was a little different than John Kerry's accident. See Bush fell when he tried to turn too hard to the right, and Kerry fell 'cause he kept switching gears."

I take rank redneck exception to the description of how my demographic dresses. Let's take it outside, city boy.
MY gripe about my cohort-on-bikes is the goddamn gray beard w/sunglasses look all the old 'tourists' sport. I decline to speak to anyone who looks that way. Call me a roadie snob.
I wear nicely coordinated, very plain lycra, by the way. Black shorts, solid yellow, red or blue jersey. I tried the baggies and they kept getting hung on the nose of my Brooks when I tried to dismount. The THEORY is sound, though. No one looks good in lycra shorts.

...until you made the smart-a$$ remark about grey beards and sunglasses. Just wait until THIS tourist comes boiling up the road behind you (I'll be the one whistling "Freebird"...)
...and as for TJ's impugning "my" fashion sense, well, THIS middle-aged cyclist likes flappy T-shirts just fine, and I don't do shorts. Ever.

Ya ride neked? How do you keep the boys safe???
Flappy shirts and baggies most often, torn pushed down tube socks and mtb shoes and pedals here.
Who freaking cares? Another mtb forum I frequent has many outbursts against the "Barneys" as they're called there: All decked out showing up too early at the road rallies, taking up the trail, walley world bikes, riding in boots, still have the reflectors on their bikes, and so on blah blah blah. Dorks and fashion challenged individuals abound everywhere. Why waste the mental energy? ANYBODY on a bike doing anything is a fine and important ambassador fighting the good fight against brainless auto drivers and self-interested politicians who won't build the trails or bike lanes to simply keep people active and healthy with smiles on their faces.
How you live your life...who you sleep with...who you vote for...what god if any your pray to...and now, ladies and gentlemen, YES: what you wear while riding are all social ills to be corrected!
If someone is pedaling something, they're good in my book. End of story.

The fly-over states seem easily influenced by wardrobe, politicians always changing to 'workman blue' and '2ndAmendment-flannel' when they go out there. So yeah, smart switch.
Too much of a 'roadie-geek' look and he'll be thrown on the pile with Dukakis' tank/helmet bravado.
