For you Luna owners.... new
#2690 - 05/03/04 03:41 PM (24.44.207.220)

Do you ever wish you had bought up? You know, gotten a Tetra or D'fly instead? Are you content?

I must say, I experience the same lust as most cycle-geeks, but for the life of me, I can't feel anything but that I had made the right choice with this frame.

I could argue that a custom Tetra would be nice in order to relax the sensitive ride characteristics of the Calfee "Crit" standard, but then that would have to be a second bike.

I am hankering for a second steed and could easily rationalize a second nautilus-wonder, but I have cravings for steel-lugged the likes of a: Vanilla, Kirk, or Spectrum. I would want a ride totally different from the Luna going so far as considering a cross-frame design with moustache bars.

Toys, wonderful toys. All I need now is the coin.

I am perfectly happy. My choice at the time was Tetra or Luna as it predated the Fly. I like the lugged look so if I got a second I would prefer a Fly. It appears from comments that carbon fiber with boron seems to have a somewhat different ride. My problem with a Fly with a son in an expensive school is $. Since you are one of those rich Westchester County folks...have pity...

I too at some point would like to sell a couple of bikes I have and get another that please me a lot more. I've viewed steel as an option as well. However everytime I look the weight is a factor. I have one bike that is heavier than 2 others and it makes a difference especially around Pittsburgh with our hills. Add to that my fat butt that doesn't seem likely to go anywhere and I need all the help I can get.

Right now if money were no object it would be a nude Fly. I just love my Calfee so much that I'd hate to switch and not have that same level of satisfaction. The odds of getting an long ride on anything of interest out here is slim. I've never seen any of the three you mentioned in Pittsburgh.

Now Kevan in return for this marvelous advice...about that Fly...

Good luck.

Lon,

Chappaqua too has its railroad tracks, and like many folks I live on the wrong side of them. If that doesn't convince you, then there's the kid's braces and college starting a year away to suck me completely dry.

I let my wife know I'd be interested in a certain little birthday present for my 50th, but with her not working as yet...

Still, the day will come soon and when it does, I'll be younger than a 24 year old pup.

You took me way too seriously Kevan. I knew that as you had told me before or someone else. Actually I live in an area known as high end but I live in what is known as either the Poor 4th (Fourth Ward) or Sunset Slums (Sunset HIlls).

However in case you hit Powerball you always know who would like that nude Fly.

I've ridden a number of bikes since I bought my Luna, and haven't regretted the decision once. However, after listening to many of you (esp Bruce "the nude man" Wells), and actually looking at the nude finish, I wish I had gone that route -- Tres Kool.

Luna rider here... one bad side effect, ever since I bought it, when I walk into a bike shop, I no longer have bike lust. I kinda miss my bike lust. But dang, that luna rides soooo nice, how can anything be THAT much better?

Still, if I was Robin Williams, I'd own a lot of bikes. Number 1 wish list for me would be a steel Pegoretti.

My Luna Pro is a couple months old and I have no second thoughts about my purchase except I probably should have selected a nude finish if I had to do it again. For the amount of cash that a painted frame costs, it is rather weak. Given the amount of riding that I do and my budget, it is about all the bike that I need. If money was no concern, I would have probably went to high end Ti, probably a Seven Axiom or a Ti Spectrum. I am glad someone posted because the forum has gotten kind of dead lately. In a way it is good sign, more folks are riding and less are typing.

Love my Calfee Luna. If I have any regrets its the color I chose not the quality of the paint job. The cobalt is nice but would love to see the weave a bit more than the cobalt allows.

Seems like nude is the preferred finish. I will have to keep that in mind. I was thinking of painted, but seeing as most prefer the nude seems I should keep the idea of nude in mind.

I guess I'm in the minority then. I think Nude looks like a rough and unfinished product. I think it looks like crap, but it's all personal preference anyway. Whatever floats your boat!

I agree. Sanding marks and voids were very evident on my nude Luna. Calfees reluctance to rectify the their error led to me selling the bike.

Go nude and live with the sanding marks, or pay another $115 to $230 and live with the paint chips.

Or get clear. I love the look of my clear Luna that it is included in the price.

As to nude being predominant, it is not. Those folks just have the strongest opinions and speak out the most. More bikes are sold clear and with paint since nude is a look that you either love or ...

I would get nude in another Calfee. However that would go with my clear one. I think given the choice of one only I would go clear.

Lon, exactly my feelings. I would consider nude strongly if for whatever reason I got another Calfee. But I couldn't pull that trigger on my first. Full clear would be another good option but I'd seen too many of those around here so I had to have some paint....and clear.

I did see a nude Luna last week and thought it looked great. I've seen other nudes I was not impressed with. I wonder if it was the bike or the lighting or how recently they were 303'd?

Paint Chips? I've seen some folks reference problems with that but after two frames I have yet to experience that so it's hardly a universal problem.

Like I said, whatever floats your boat, but from my perspective the differences between nude and painted with clearcoat are wide. You also have a much more protected frame with a painted/clearcoated job.

Then throw in the aspect of damage being done to a protective coat or a ding going straight into carbon...nude is a no go IMO.

Nude new [Re: SpinDoc]
#3236 - 06/02/04 12:38 PM (12.76.119.76)

I should say that I have not seen a nude Luna or Tetra in person. As far as I know there is only one other Calfee in my parts. I've never seen him yet. I've only seen them on posts.

Spin as always makes some good points. From looking at the pictures and comments it seems to me that when the 303 is first put on they look the best nude. Being a good anal person I'd probably be putting it on all the time. I clean my clear bike after every ride.

I hope to see one someday. We now have a Calfee dealer in Pittsburgh. They liked my bike so much and were mad at Colnago that they dropped Colnago and went Calfee.

Lon,
I saw a nude finished dragonfly in a shop in Atlanta. I liked the look of it. It reminded me of a stealth fighter plane. The clearcoat finish has never done much for me because in most lighting conditions it just has a glossy black appearance.

As far as chipping, I got my bike in March and it already has (or had) two paint chips. The first chip was "installed" by the shop that assembled the bike that I touched up. The other showed up last weekend and I have no idea how it happened. Both were on the top tube. I plan to ride it for a couple seasons and if numerous chips show up, and if it bugs me enough. I will probably send it back to Calfee and pay for another paint job.

I could not even begin to count the chips on my Kestrel. I don't let it bug me and if some get really bad I put a sticker over it. I have a flag and a Chris King so far. Someday I plan to get it painted. I just hate to break it down, ship it and not have it. Plus trying to find someone really good isn't easy. Then I figure one ride and you can guess...
