DaveN - Story behind your Motorola MX Leader? new
#236 - 12/26/03 10:16 AM (206.126.9.159)

Dave,

Truth be told I have never seen a bike so beautiful as the Motorola "team replica" you had pictured in the gallery a while back. Can you tell us the story behind that bike, where did you get it, how many were made (are they still available?) and most importantly how does it ride and compare with some of your other steelies?

Also, if you could post the pix again, that would be great.

Aloha,

K

yes, dave, please do post a pix if you have a moment. the MX you helped me buy on eBay should arrive soon, in motorola colors. trying to figure out how to built it up. your rig would be an inspiration.

as an aside, any idea whether its possible to visit the merckx factory? i'm going to be in london for a few days in january on business. have reoccurring image of hopping on a train to belgium and spending a day soaking up a few things eddy.

Sorry K. Missed your note the first time around. I will get those pics back up asap. The MX-Leader you say was NOS from Gita, identical to the current models in tubeset, etc but with a threaded fork. I bought it through Competitive Cyclist (Gita will not sell frames except through a dealer.) There was one 52cm left in these Motorola at Gita the last time I checked (about 6 weeks ago.) Gita had a few odd size left in other colors as well. This year, they are bringing in this frame with a threadless fork in 54cm and up in the Molteni Orange scheme, but no more of the Motorola colors.

Ride? Supeb. Comfortable, etc, etc. More later, we have family coming over and it is 'honey do' time.

I will get the photos back up asap. Sorry. Dave N.

BiKyle is proferring the notion that Eddy will build you a custom Corsa or MXL in Molteni, 7-11, or Motorola. If I could have one with a threaded fork and custom, I'd jump on a new Corsa---I dont' need the stiffer MXL. But as it is, too much already on the plate. Perhaps next year, if there are any lugged steel bikes left coming from Europe. It appears as if Carrera Podium has given up on lugs at last, though there are still NOS Volans and Shield around in the US.

A bit off-topic but I bet you have Motorola team jerseys too..? It used to be one of my favorites until I completely shredded it in a crash years ago. Looked like someone took a 12-gauge to the back of it.

Actually, I can't find a Team Jersey in my size (XXXL) or anything close. I guess I will just have to console myself with the bike instead! Dave N.

I posted some photos in the "Production" section of the image galleries, now waiting approval. Two of the Motorola bike and a few of the newer, Molteni version (current production, threadless steerer.) The unique shape of the tubeset and the marvelous job they do on the lugs, the construction, and the paint should be evident from the closeups. Dave N.

dave or douglas, any idea whether new MXL built today differ very much from older ones, save of course threaded vs. non-threaded? thanks, climb.

There seems to be virutally no differences between my Motorola MX-Leader (threaded fork) and my Molteni (current production, theadless fork.) The tubing, the forks, everything else appears to be identical, and the quality remains as it was before, excellent. Dave

I'm actually saving up for a MX Leader in 7-11 colors. I love that paint scheme.

funny. i'm thinking of getting a molteni. though if i love the mid-90s MXL (motorola colors) when it arrives off ebay, getting a molteni might be overkill. especially since i'm trying to limit myself to one new bike in '04 and am leaning toward a ti. but darn, molteni isnice.
