Just replaced the cables/casings on my Campag Record bike and there is included in the kit (Campag) the metal casing end caps for the brakes/derailleurs. One of the end caps is referred to as a step down rear derailleur cap and has a smaller outside diameter at the none casing end. Could someone please explain since I found the regular casing end cap to fit the rear derailleur and this special end cap was not on my bike when I took off the old cables.
Thanks

If it's any like what's in the Shimano cable set, the step down ferrule is used for the rear dérailleur cable, on the chainstay cable stop. Often these stops are slightly undersized and the ferrule allows the cable housing to fit snugly in the stop.

The little casing end cap with the step down section is a carry over from the older days of steel frames when most builders used an eyelet style brazed on fitting to secure the rear derailleur cable on to the chainstay. In this set up, only the little stepped part is held in the eyelet, the bigger part of the cap rested against the eyelets side to stop the cable end from sliding through. This is mostly a discontinued item on a lot of bikes of today and the regular type of end cap is what is used now. Somehow manufacturers still think its necessary to include it considering its usually never used.
