Build for Ti crown jewel
#3424 - 06/15/04 05:08 PM (129.71.207.144)

Well I finally came up with some extra money to order some new components for my new IF. I was planning on running the Ultegra group that was on my last bike. Once my friends found out about this they basicly told me that my life would be in danger if I put used ultegra on a new ti crown jewel. After trying to justify it to both myself and them I finally gave in.

I did a little research and found out that the new fsa carbon team crankset that I bought would be compatible with campy. I also found out that I can buy a new cassette body thing-a-majig to make my hugi 240 rear hub campy compatible. At first I was going to go with chorus but then I figured for relatively little extra I could get record. Anywho, here is how my build is looking so far. Let me know what ya think.

IF crown jewel compact frame
Ouza Pro fork
Kestrel EMS Pro SL bar (already have)
Giant carbon stem (already have and no logo on it)
Easton EC70 carbon seatpost (already have)
Specialized body geometry pro saddle (everyone has their own choice for saddles, this is mine)
2004 Campy Record shifters (ordered today)
2004 Campy Record front derailleur (carbon) (ordered today)
2004 Campy Record rear derailleur (carbon) (ordered today)
2004 Campy Chorus 13-29 cassette (ordered today)
2004 Campy Chain (ordered today)
FSA Carbon Pro Team crankset (39/53)
FSA Platinum Pro Ti bottom bracket
Crank brothers egg beaters (stainless) (already have)
Hugi 240 hubs laced to Sun ME14A rims w/ti quick release
Michelin Pro Race tires (already have)

I still haven't decided on brakes, leaning towards Cane Creek BRS-200 SL Titanium Brake Calipers though. I am also debating between a record headset or a king headset. Other than that and picking out some bar tape I'm pretty much just waiting for the frame. BTW, does anyone else think it's nuts that a lock ring is not included with campy cassettes?

Now all I have to do until the end of July is think about riding this thing. Waiting for this frame is killing me! Anyway, what ya think? Will this build be worthy of the frame?

Why the Egg Beaters? new [Re: LowCel]

How come your going with the egg beaters? Have you ridden them on road bikes very long? (Always go with the stainless. The chrome rust.)

Not questioning your logic, but looking for insight. I have egg beaters on all my (and my wife's) mountain bikes. So...I put them on my Litespeed figuring I like them, they're light, and I don't have to get new shoes.

Now I'm thinking I might want to switch to road pedals (new shoe purchase along with it ) only because of the larger platform it offers. I have carbon soles on my shoes so they're pretty damn stiff. But I do notice the smaller platform (or is it my imagination?) of the eggs on the road, never thought about it on dirt. Also, the float's a little more than I want when riding on the road. That bugs me, and to reduce it I'd have to switch the cleats, but then that defeats the whole purpose of having one set of shoes for all my bikes. I'm not about to be swapping cleats every time I ride.

So...er, see see first questions before I rambled. Thanks,
Nev

make sure you thank your friends for making sure you didn't make that major faux pas. everything else sounds really good, not sure of the breaks tho-i'd stick with campy. good luck.

Terry, I definately owe my friends, I didn't really want to use the Ultegra but I didn't really have the extra money. I ended up selling one of my mountain bikes to help me pay off the frame, buy a cyclocross bike and buy the components.

As for the brakes I would really like to get the records but the price is definately pretty steep. I gues I'm being a little picky but they are the only campy brakes I would consider since they are the only black ones. I'm not going to be having any silver on this bike with the exception of the chain, cassette and pedals.

Nev, I only started using the eggbeaters on my road bike this season. I had Look pedals before. I really like the eggs on the road, I did go ahead and buy the road cleats and I use road shoes. At first I had them set up for maximum float and I HATED them. Once I switched the cleats around they were fine. I don't really notice the smaller platform, of course I am pretty used to using these pedals on my mtb. If you plan on getting another pair of shoes anyway just get some road cleats and give them a shot.

BTW, I keep my mtb set up to minimum float as well. Riding in WV crashing is pretty common, when it happens I like to be able to get out of the pedals as soon as possible.

You got the eggbeater road cleats? Is this what you have?

Do the rubber pontoons really give more stability on the pedal or are they just for walking? And where do they mount? I was hoping to not get another pair of shoes. For my mtb-ing, and therefore on my shoes, I have my cleats set up for maximum float, but curiously for the same reason as you. It feels easier to get out, especially when going down. Something I've done a lot this year, including two broken ribs at a 24hr race in AZ, but that's another story.

Yeah those are the cleats I have. All they do is help out with walking, the contact area is still the same.

As for the broken bones, I had one of those years last year. Fractured collar bone, grade two AC seperation. Previous year had bruised kidney and two fractured ribs.

Made a change to the build new [Re: LowCel]
#3525 - 06/29/04 05:33 PM (129.71.207.144)

Well since I haven't been able to locate a hugi 240 conversion kit so that I can run a campy cassette I went ahead and ordered a new wheelset. I ordered American Classic hubs, Wheelsmith AE 15 spokes and DTSwiss RR 1.1 rims. According to Mike Garcia at Odds and endos this wheelset should weigh right around 1400 grams. I think this setup should do pretty well on the bike.

Also, I ended up going with a king headset. I finally ordered my brakes too, went with cane creek 200sl's. Hopefully this bike will end up being pretty light. Any guesses on the weight?

Well, thought it was shipping out on Wednesday. If it had been I would be receiving it today. I guess IF got sidetracked or something since the frame wasn't shipped out until Thursday. Oh well, whats another few days I guess.

I will definately be happy if it ends up weighing in at that. I made a couple of changes. The stem is now a Specialized S-Works OS carbon stem. I found a crack in my Kestrel bar so I sent that back to them and they are sending me an oversized bar instead. I also made a change on the seat, going with a Fizik Aliante Ti instead.

I had planned on going with lighter pedals as well, I ordered a set of the Aerolite pedals. Once I took a look at the cleats I changed my mind though, they went on ebay. Once I finish paying the bike off (only owe another $280 on it) I will probably be ordering some speedplay pedals. Other than that I believe I will be pretty happy with all of my component choices.....at least for a little while.
