WooHoo! Did my first century today!!! new

Well I know that to most of you this is no big deal, but to me it's a huge accomplishment. I have been wanting to do this for about two years now. It was sort of slow as well, 6:21, don't really care though, I'm just happy that I survived.

What's really bad is that when I first started the ride I was only planning on riding 30 or 40 miles. Once I started riding I figured I might as well stretch it out a little. I'll tell ya one thing, I'm glad I went ahead and stuck ten bucks in my seat bag, I needed it. I ended up going thru 4 bottles of water and two bottles 50/50 gatorade and water. I also went thru two oatmeal bars and 1/2 of a powerbar. Oh yeah, and one tube and I had to stop once at a local shop and have my rear wheel trued. It was already out of true some but once I had the blowout the rim was actually rubbing the brakes. Oh yeah, did I mention I was riding a 22 pound 100% aluminum (including fork) cyclocross bike. I'm still waiting for my ti crown jewel to come in so this is all that I have to ride for the time being, with the exception of my Santa Cruz Superlight mountain bike, but it's not all that efficient on the road.

Anyway, the first 35 miles or so was hills, the remainder was pretty much flat. I was planning on riding the same 35 miles back home but to be honest I don't think I could have done it, if I had done it I wouldn't be able to move. I don't know if you have ever been to West Virginia but the term hill is a gross understatement. Once I hit about the 60 mile mark I just started riding some local loops, I wanted to make sure that if my body decided to just quit and I fell over dead someone would find me. Long story short, I accomplished a long time goal, it may not seem like much but I'm excited!

OK, I'm done rambling....till next time, have a good one!

A century is always a big deal for anyone. That is a lot of miles and hours. There is no easy century. That is like saying an easy marathon. It just doesn't happen and when you add in your present ride then it means all the more.

I would suggest in the future carrying more food on you such as a gel or two or three, id, and a small wallet. I carry a business card case which is small but effective. I try to have 50 dollars, id, and a credit card. I've used all at one time or another. The money is there because plastic doesn't always work.

Good luck with the new bike and enjoy yourself. I'm from Pittsburgh so I know your hills.
