Good ways to weigh? new
#3613 - 07/08/04 03:12 AM (68.192.78.228)

Okay, I'm stumped.

I've been trying to think of a good, accurate way to weigh my bike. After building my Dragonfly, I did the ol' "stand on a scale holding it" thing and got 16.5 lbs. No friggin way is it that heavy.

Then I picked up an el-cheapo fishing scale. It's reading 15.5ish. I have an electronic fishing scale (about $34.95 vs my current scale's 7.00) but don't know if it'll be any better.

If I can't think of anything soon, I'm driving to the airport and asking them if i can weigh it on the baggage scale. I need a good, calibrated device.

TIA

How about "calibrating" your bathroom scale? 7 liters of water is almost 15.5 pounds. By the time you include the four 2 liter soda bottles, it probably will be 15.5 pounds. So weigh yourself while carrying the water and see if you scale is even in the ballpark.

You can probably also use some 5lb bags of sugar or flour too.

However, quit worrying about your bike weight and just ride!

Fishing scale? I'd assume you do fish so next time you go fishing, bring your bike and take it a shop nearest to the Marina. Usually they keep a calibrated scale just in case somebody breaks those IGFA records. Other places that keeps a calibrated scale are the feeds vendors. Pig farms too have a calibrated scale.

My shop has a digital scale designed to weigh fish for contest etc. It is extremely accurate. It has a curved section you can hang bikes and such from. For small items I have a digital postal scale. I bought it for postage but it is great for small parts.

Things are going well. I hope it is the same for you.

I'm just short of 3,000 miles for the year. Considering the weather in January, February, and early March I'm happy with that. I'm starting a cross state ride in PA on Sunday. Saturday is a tune-up ride. I've done it before however this route is a little different once it gets out of the mountains.

I still love the Calfee. It never ceases to amaze me.

Take care.

P.S. It sounds like we have the same basic scale.

Do a google search for hanging digital scales. Given that what you're after weighing is <=25 pounds, you can find a good digital gram scale that is actually accurate. I recently searched myself, but since I wanted to be able to weigh my mountain bikes as well, I wanted on that could do up to 50 pounds (DH bikes are heavy Anyway, what I discovered along the way is that the scales that are accurate to a small number of grams (say to 20g or less) cost a fair bit more and are a fewer in number. I think you'll have a lot better luck given the 25pound or less range. The scales are typically fishing scales, or various others.

Try americanweigh.com, I think that's where I got mine.
