A friend of mine is getting into cycling after years of my telling him to. He now loves it, but is getting a sore butt on a 43 mile ride. He has a CF Trek. I have not seen his position on it, but I think he probably needs a fitting to get the bike just right. I know it did wonders for me.
Any one know of a good fitter in the central New Jersey area. We are talking the lower part of 287, but I am sure he would be willing to travel. He will also pay for the fitting.

How long has he been on that saddle? I think a newbie riding 43 miles before getting sore is pretty good! Heck, in the spring time, my butt gets sore after a 40 mile ride.
Of course, the above doesn't mean he shouldn't get fitted though. Sorry I can't help with a recommendation, I live in San Jose.

My thoughts exactly Skuke. The other question is the saddle itself. That makes a gigantic difference in butt soreness especially if the guy is anything like me and has no "natural padding" to benefit from.

Both good points, and I have not seen his position yet. My experience is that most beginner cyclists don't have the right position. Most probably don't have the right saddle either, but that is sush a hit or miss thing, so I think he has to get is position right before he can worry about if he as the right saddle. I will try to get him over here in hills of Westchester to check out his position in the near future.
