The best way to build a full-blown COMMUNITY of cyclists is to make things personal -- get to know each other off the bike, as it were. Share a sandwhich and a beer instead of a Powerbar and Gatorade.
If we had a little tiny out-of-the-way forum called The Water Cooler where folks could kick off their uncomfortable cycling shoes and talk about themselves as individuals, discuss the news of the day, argue who's going to win the National League East, post a pic of their dog etc, we could get to know each other as more than just abstract and anonymous posters. We could be friends too. Or friendly enemies, like me and that pinhead Live Steam from RBR!
This board has unlimited potential. All it needs is dimensionality and more lively, engaged people.
Let's gather around The Water Cooler to discuss that, plus whether your taxes are too low, my Bloodhound stinks, and Duke is FAR inferior to The University of Kentucky as a basketball powerhouse?
What say the All Great and Powerful Kahuna?

I have to agree. I thought we had the perfect little world here Ed, but now I think you're right. Something over there in the corner, by the Pepsi machine, would be nice.

about Spin and precision in political language?
Didn't you notice a teensy little reference to 'news of the day' dropped in among all the soft little apple pie examples like 'pictures of Dawgs' and 'baseball?'
What the hell do you think 'news of the day' is, and why is it surrounded by Norman Rockwell?
Sheesh.
P.S. Who are you? thread is a great idea. You start. Proceed.

Big College BB fan here. Love the game. Kind of disliked Kentucky when Pitino was there. Not a big Pitino fan.

genuinely scary, Pitino Returns, that kind of team. Think Kentucky '96.
This is the year he's been pointing at, and it's all falling in place. One year from tonight you will be HEARING from Pitino, OES guarantee,

If Josh Childress returns Stanford will be tough. UNC had 3 possibly returning ACC studs and a top recruiting class. Duke is gonna be reloading. I am not a Pitino fan but he does have quite a roster returning. They just seem so undisciplined when I have seen them play(which is limited).

"fast" and "aggressive" with "undisciplined." Pitino's teams are as disciplined as any in the country. But I guess I could see how they'd LOOK undisciplned to someone not familiar with his style.

Maybe something like this? http://www.bikefanclub.com/forum/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/general
It's described: "General Discussion Non-specific Bicycle Banter. Anything goes!"

There's an internal contradiction in the wording. It says non-specific BICYCLE banter (not just banter of any sort) but then it says "anything goes."
Like a 'well REGULATED militia' being connected syntactically to 'the right oif the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' Who knows how those divergent concepts play off each other?
Since we're new to the site, we don't want to trample any toes. If it's OK to talk politics on the general discussion board under the concept of 'anything goes,' fine. If not, we need our own place. Or if it's unwelcome to discuss politics anywhere on this site, we need to shut the hell up.
Good citizens. That's what we promised to be, and we will.

Why not use that section for non cycling banter and discussion. It may liven up the board.

Three things are absolutely crucial to this colony's success:
(a) POST. Posts are oxygen here.
(b) CHANGE SUBJECT LINES WHEN REPLYING. Nothing's more boring that a long string of "re: spoke question."
(c) TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Bring 'em over here to check us out. Tell 'em how LIVELY we are. Then SHOW 'em.

BTW, what's the latest hot poop on Kerry? I don't like him, I just want some dirt.

McCain finally gave him a final no, he's worried to death that the charismatic Edwards will take the spotlight off him if he takes the VP spot, his ideas for an acceptably less-charismatic running mate are driving the Party pros straight uip the wall in exasperation, and he has suddenly realized he has absolutely no issue on which to distinguish himself from Bush in a way that motivates people to support him.
Other than that, things are just peachy. Sigh.
Imagine how many points up Dean would be, on Iraq alone, if the Party hadn't lost its nerve last February.

This is the best move he's made since I don't know when. I was amused to hear the GOP poo-pooh Edwards' lack of foreign policy experience, as if their candidate GWB had any four years ago.
The GOP ticket was/is heavy on experience in the second, bottom position, and light at the top. Seems backward to me, and just the opposite of the Democratic ticket.

Has any of that supposed GOP "experience" of Cheney the Haliburton puppet helped them make good foreign policy decisions?
Anyone out there who hasn't been in a coma for the past 18 months think this administration has made wise foreign policy decisions?????????? :-)

As Michael Savage says so well, "liberalism is a mental disorder" so I don't suppose you would understand why Bush is the better candidate.

Bush? The better candidate? Hmmm..... it's you who needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
Let me share a few items from today's newspaper which I read over my cup of coffee:
- AMERICANS' INCOME SHRANK 9%, IRS SAYS
- WHITE HOUSE FORECASTS HIGHEST BUDGET DEFICIT IN HISTORY
- ECONOMY SLOWS DOWN AS ENERGY COSTS RISE
- BIG OIL POSTS RECORD PROFITS IN LAST QUARTER
- DELTA AIRLINES CEO ASKS PILOTS FOR $1 BILLION IN COST CUTS
- WASHINGTON MUTUAL ANNOUNCES LAYOFFS OF 3400 EMPLOYEES
And that's not even looking at the debacle over in Iraq.
No, ggg, it's people like you who need come to grips with how Bush has failed not the liberals, but rather, how he has failed the true conservative-minded citizens who supported him in last election.

I don't understand why either, GGG.
Nothing you wrote makes any sense to me, starting with your Savage quote.
Please explain.

Quote:
And let's not forget what we did in the 1990s. We balanced the budget. We paid down the debt. We created 23 million new jobs. We lifted millions out of poverty and we lifted the standard of living for the middle class. We just need to believe in ourselves and we can do it again. -John Kerry, 2004 Democrat National Convention
Democrats like Kerry and Edwards seem to be pinning their hopes on Americans with short memories. Unfortunately for them, more than a few people remember the 1990's economy marked by too many companies with inflated valuations, dubious and/or unsustainable business models, and burn rates that were eating through capital as fast as you could say "A series". Stock markets were overvalued and oversold. There was nothing less than IPO hysteria taking place. Supply chain industries were booming to fill anticipated orders. Businesses across the country had overmanufactured and overstocked inventories (anyone want to buy a few warehouses full of fiber optic routers?), and the job market had swelled to meet existing and future labor needs. It was no wonder the 90s economy was doomed to self-desctruct, and it did in spectacular fashion practically overnight. The Fed had all but predicted it. Greenspan voiced warning signals suggesting a major correction in the equity markets was imminent. A few smart investors knew it. However, most folks got caught with blinders on. Who ever thought the good times would come to an end? When it crashed, that's when people leanrned why they called it "a bubble".
Add to all that corporate scandals and accounting fraud - perpetrated by some of the largest companys in the US (spare me with the "it's Bush and Cheney's fault" crap) and a host of other factors including 9/11 all served to add fuel to the ensuing decline.
John Kerry wants to do it again? Is he off his rocker?
Most people are smart enough to know the ecomony behaves as a cycle. Right we're in a growth period. Yes it's slower this time but that's probably a good thing because the indicators are more realistic and people seem to have their feet planted on the ground this time.
If you think outsourcing jobs overseas is bad, don't kid yourself because things could be far worse than they are now.

Awesome job working in a reference to keep the thread in context of the forum, to remind us why we are all here, even when discussing politics. Nice job overall, too.
BTW: Nev says, "Vote Libertarian." Keep your freedom and prosperity to yourself.
