Luigino new
#1408 - 02/20/04 10:07 PM (216.210.228.10)

Anyone have direct personal experience with this frame? After seeing the Pegoretti name come up on the Serotta forum and here--and after delving into all things Dario these past few months--I really REALLY like the Luigino frame. If its like any of his other frames--which all seem excellent in their own ways--it's gotta be a dream.

if you post this question on the serotta site, i know of at least two riders there who own them and like them. they'd be happy, i'm sure, to share their thoughts. or search old serotta forum for luigino posts, of which there were a number. good luck. it is a sweet looking frame.

When in doubt, shut up and pedal.

It's possible (likely) that Climb's reference to a Luigino owner includes me. I have one of the "blue ones" that came in as stock frames in the first batch. I have a custom with the new plated fork crown on order that is due sometime...uhh...soon, I guess. Dario is busy, I hear, and I'm not about to disturb him! I also have a Marcelo and a Fina. Of all the modern bikes and all the work coming out of Italy, Pegoretti is far and away my favorite.

The "new", custom Luiginos will be different because Dario doesn't have the same bits. But a few words about the first batch. These are _modern_ oldschool bikes. The toptube is not 1" but the more modern OS. The dropouts are the slightly "later" Campagnolo 1010B, not quite as long or as horizontal as the famous 1010A. The lugs are the key since Dario says they are not investment cast in the same way as modern ones. I've never quite fully followed his description but in order to use the modern tubing (this bike is Deda), you'd need "modern" diameter lugs. There are a few wonderful conceits to oldschool, the most obvious of which are the over the bb cable guide braze-ons (like you see still on Nagasawas) and the old fork crown (though I am not sure of its origin, I am sure it is Italian). The lugs are simple, crisp with good shorelines, not filed thin thin (as was the fashion in the 80s particularly).

The ride is sublime though I wish I had gotten a 60 or 61 instead of this blasted 57. The smaller bike makes this one of my more "aggressive" fits with the bars lower than I'd like and the whole profile of the bike not quite the "fist full of seatpost" that would be appropriate for the "era" and for any bike I really love to ride. Still the handling is lovely, the bike is steady, calm, fast and fun. Dario is a brilliant builder and you have the sense of riding with him, not with a machine made on a production line. Crisp but not too fast up front, good descender (this is THE mark of a great bike to me because there is nothing better than feeling utterly fearless on a descent!), and an able, happy climber.

My new Luigino will have a threaded 1" fork, dt bosses, and it will be painted as if it were a 50s Legnano. Dario went so far as to visit Bianchi (who bought Legnano years ago) to check out the variations in this famour "yellow" (near gold) color. I'll post pictures once it appears. We can be sure that Dario has been busy with lots of bikes to build. Good thing he starts each day at 8:30 a.m.

Thanks for the info on Pegorettis. It very much confirms my worst fear: I don't have a clue which bike I really want now. (Insert deer in headlights look here.)

At some point I WILL have a Pegoretti--now not sure which one. I'm in the queue for a Vanilla sometime this summer: lugged steel, that goes downhill with zero fear, comfortable for longer rides.

I already own a Legend ti-- perfect; Waterford RSE-22-- perfect commuter/foul weather/longer rides bike/could be my favorite?; Klein Q Pro Carbon-- for my tech fix; Rivendell All-Rounder-- just because. So I have a lot of the materials and applications of them covered.

I went for a Vanilla because Sacha is local and builds beautiful, beautiful bikes in an old warehouse here. Very nice guy; of course all these months of waiting have me wondering if I should have him do a smooth fillet frame instead now... or do I get the Pegoretti tig'd version of that... because my Waterford (& Riv) have lugs covered...grrrr.

Am hoping for that moment of clarity that makes my dream bike stable come into perfect focus.

(BTW am nervous about posting my Peg questions on the Serotta Forum out of deference to Ben & Co.)

I shouldn't do this because I have my eye on this frame as well, but the owner of Il Vecchio here in Seattle is planning on selling his personal Luigino frame sometime in the near future. It's a 60 and just my size with a 59 top tube. It currently looks great built up with a selection of retro components.

Well, it's caught my eye. Anybody care to share their first-hand experience with a 2004 Luigino? What wheel setup/gruppo would you recommend? And of course, do you Love this frame? Any disappointments/rethinks out there?
Grazie.

I had one of the first-batch blue Luiginos (which I sold for having ordered it too small, those cut away lugs really shortened the headtube) and now have one on order for nearly a year, maybe more. Word reached from a visitor to Dario's shop that mine was in the making but so far, not a peep from the man himself, the dealer, or Gita. Anyway my incoming frame will be painted in the old Legnano colors, Dario having gone to the current Bianchi factory (who now own the old Legnano stuff) to check out the versions of this famous color. This was above and beyond, but typical of Dario who is a thoughtful and gifted builder. The details on my Luigino were wonderful and the new one will have the twin-plate crown and a few other details but size in at about 60cm. I would jump on another if I could find a 60 from the first batch...These are great bikes. My only complaint such as it is is the price, a feature of the Euro/USD exchange. If this weren't a Pegoretti I would never pay the current cost in light of other wonderful lugged steel bikes made in America. It may be that Pegoretti is among the very, very few one man shops in Italy still making custom lugged steel. Fantastic ride, no doubt about it, and a great guy too.
