Opinions on carbon saddle rails
#3980 - 08/25/04 12:04 AM (24.234.138.108)

What is everyone's opinon on carbon rails found on fizik, selle italia, ax ligthness? Are they durable enough to withstand rider's weight/pedaling stroke, rough road? Looking into fizik aliante with carbon rails but would hate to have the rails crack, esp at that price.

I have a Fizik Alliante w/ carbon rails. I find it x-tremely comfortable. I Have encountered no problems/damage on the roughest of roads. Then again, on the roughest of roads, one is usually light in the saddle except for those pot holes that hide in the shadows or around that blind corner. They do have a weight limit though. Fizik recommends their saddle w/ Ti rails if over 185 lbs.
By the way, if u plan on using an USE Alien seat post, (nice post but not user friendly) u will have to replace the clamp head. The CF rails take a 8mm clamp head where as the Ti uses a standard 7mm. It will cost around $15.00.
Hope this helps,

Fish

The Selle Italia Novus had carbon rails 7 years ago and I've had a variety of them through the years. They do have an alloy like rail over it that you clamp on to. There wasn't a weight limit I'm aware of. I probably have over 30,000 miles on them and never a problem. I've also had the same saddle with vanadium rails. To be honest I don't feel a ride difference. The high zoot factor is there but not a discernable difference that I can feel. I'm also the guy that gets flamed from time to time for saying that a carbon post improves ride at least for my sensitive butt. (I'm also the one that can tell when my rear bearings are getting loose before there is much of a problem. The amazing thing is that with all the padding on my butt I can feel anything through it. )

Sounds like the durability of carbon rails is not that big of an issue. I had a friend snap the carbon rails on a Fizik, though he did slip on a gear change and all his weight landed on the nose of the saddle. I'm sure even with the Ti version he would have done some damage as well.
I do have the Alien seatpost and though light, is a pain in the butt to adjust. Worse design ever, in my opinion. Know where I can order the adapter plates for cheap?

About the clamp block, first check with your LBS, no doubt they are aware of this and they may know of a local distributor. If not, go to www.use1.com, go to alien seat clamp, then on left side of page, go to fitting instructions. Scroll down to about the 8th pic and there's a section that mentions larger saddle rails. Click on that link and follow the instructions.
Good luck.
