creak/click noise
#3987 - 08/25/04 07:04 PM (134.197.18.149)

I have an 02 Tetra Pro which I love. However, in the last month a noise has developed which is driving me crazy. It is a sort of repetitive creaking noise which only occurs when I get out of the saddle to pedal and seems to be in synch with the pedal strokes. I took apart the front end and found no problems. I've got a USE Alien carbon seat post which took about 6 months before it stopped slipping, but now is stable. I didn't grease the post per advise I got from people in this forum. I'm running an Ultegra BB which has about 8000 miles on it, so I don't think it should be the problem. It's definitely not the pedals as I've tested two pairs on different bikes. No creaking with either pair on another bike, creaking there with both pairs on this bike. I think it's probably the seatpost, but what can be done. Could it also be coming from the interface of the titanium BB sleeve with the carbon frame? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks.

I had the same problem once. It was the skewers creaking against the dropouts. A little grease there and it went away. It can particularly occur with Salsa skewers or so I am told.

check the bolts too on the rings and cranks. it might need some re torque ing (isdataword?:) ) .

might not be a bad idea to check the BB too for the 2nd time.

It doesn't sound like seat post if it's only out of the saddle you find the noise. My money would be on dropouts or more likely bottom bracket. You can get a dirty interface between the aluminum sleeve and the BB. Clean it up really well and wrap the bb threads in plumbers tape and reinstall.

I think bb creaks are probably the most common cause of creaks...at the same time everyone else always wants to look elsewhere first. I disagree. Look at BB first and if it still creaks go looking for the rare causes...post, saddle, hubs, pedals, DR's etc.

I agree. Check the bb bracket first. Clean and relube sleeve and retorque. I would rule this out first before checking anything else. Doesn't matter if you have 1 mile or 5000 miles, everthing needs to be readjusted after awhile.. Had the same problem with mine..squeeked on downstroke on drive side. Relubed an retorqued. Haven't had a problem since.

I had a ti bike that developed a creak in the headset.I had to knock the cups out ,clean and regrease, and reinstall the cups.Every 6 months. Most BB noises occur when seated as well as standing,so the standing only makes me think that if all else fails, check the headset.Does it do it seated if you really honk on it?Hands off bars?

Mine also made the noise while seated,so I was able to put my hand on the tt and see where I could feel it and the sound changed, but you may not be able to do this while standing.Carbon doesn't conduct the noise like ti,either.

Hope this helps,Dan C.

What other said, plus, I was riding behind a guy last night with pedal creaks, only when he stood. Was driving me nuts, I kept wondering if it was my bike.

My money is on the bb or dropouts, but noises can come from anywhere. I once had a creak I SWORE was from the front, but it turned out to be my tire levers banging into the seatpost, from inside my saddle bag.

My riding buddy and I faced "creak" problems this year. His was pedals. Mine was rear skewer (tightening the quick release and lubricating solved this one). On one other "creaking occasion" tightening the bolts on the chain rings seemed to help. Good luck.

I had a noise on my new (350 miles) DF and it kind of creaked and clicked just as you say here. I checked my BB, my chain rings (DuraAce 10spd) cranks etc... Could not find anything. Then I cleaned the cleaned the chain and while running the chain through a rag I felt a bump each revolution. The chain had been put togather wrong and one of the outer plates had a crack and the pin was out of place ever so slightly. It was "ticking" and "creaking" and I was lucky it held the last 15 miles of the ride I was on when it began. So as others have said these noises can come from a lot of places so check everything.

Mine was a cracked fixing cup on my Record BB. Only creaked while seated but kept getting worse with every ride.
