Any ideas/suggestions for large (to fit 64cm) travel cases?

I've had nothing but problems with the cases from Performance. The U-bolt thing in the clasps pop off. I lose at least one every trip, including losing locks. Have had them pop off in my hand. Performance sends me new ones I have to rivet back on. I own two and have problems with both.

I've bitched about this endlessly on other forums. Others don't seem to have the problem.

Just some experience,
Nev

I've been very happy with my Trico. I've never heard of anyone who wasn't. However due to the size of your frame I can't comment on fit.

The mechanic in one shop had a customer who bought a Performance Case and had problems with his as well. He recommended the Iron Case.

I've used my Scicon soft case for about 6 flights. It has served me well, and is easy to cart around and store while on vacation.

Having read recently of someone who watched his bike case searched and then his frame destroyed as they closed the case makes me wonder if I ever want to fly a bike again. I might very well ship it by UPS or Fed X Ground to where I want it. Plus the cost would not be much different.

This is a good point. For many reasons.

In recent years I've had to open my boxes for them to search. I was lucky I got to stand there. Some times they let me do it with them, others I had to walk them through it on the "other side of the line." And those folks have zero idea what they're doing -- not that they should. Taught me to put nothing in the box besides the bike because they have to put the puzzle back. This was all with my mountain bikes I had the wheels off, fork removed... If they're doing it themselves you can be guaranteed they'll open it, take it all apart and smash it back together. You have to worry about the cables, deraileurs, parts rubbing on frame, spokes...

Another thing about air travel is the cost. American's price I think is $80! for the oversize/weight charge. Round trip, $160! for one bike. Although this can depend on the ticketing person. I've had them let the boxes slide. A curb guy once only charged me for one when I had two. But you never know. Shipping is WAY cheaper.

Shipping is looking better and better for me and what I did my last race. I shipped my bikes in my boxes UPS and it was $30 - $40. And I packed them. I heard Fed-X ground is even cheaper. My friends had their bikes shipped here for a race and their shop just used leftover cardboard bike boxes. That's how my last mtb bike arrived at my doorstep no problem. But when another shop shipped my dad's old Bob Jackson roadie thing to me the same way they didn't do a good job and a spoke was popped and brake arm bent. So it's important it gets packed by someone you trust. Remember, if a shop packs it, they will charge you. You add that to shipping.

My only issue with shipping was not having my bike for a week before and after my trip. But I have so many now, including my wife's bikes that fit me, that's not an issue any more.

I say a good box you trust and can lock you pack yourself and ship is the cheapest and safest way to go. Plus it's easily and inexpensively insured. For now on I'll only be taking mine with me on planes if I'm going to Timbuktu with no person or shop at the other end to receive them for me.

In over 20 years of shipping my bikes all over the world, I have never use a better case the current one I using. Here's the link where I got it.
