best LBS for fitting in SF Bay Area new
#4248 - 09/30/04 06:05 PM (207.88.248.142)

I'm a soon-to-be new Calfee owner. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good place to get fitted, preferably in the South Bay? I know which shops sell Calfees, but I don't want to necessarily restrict myself to those; I'd even pay a fee at an independent if someone could convince me it's worth it.

I am 6'4", with a 36-37" inseam. Anyone have a guess at what size Calfee I'd ride? From what I've found on this forum and elsewhere, there seems to be a curious range of sizes people choose (I know fit is a personal thing, but still...).

Thanks in advance.

That would be the job of the fitter.

Try Cupertino Bikes on De Anza Blvd., Cupertino. I personally have never had a fitting but know several people who have been very satisfied.

If I lived as close as you do, I'd start off by taking a day or two and driving down to Calfee. You would not be the first to do it.

I bought my Tetra Pro from Crossroads in Los Gatos and could not be more pleased. The owner, Michael, spent an incredible amount of time changeing gear sets to arrive at the right comination. He also has the expertise to find the right frame set-up for you.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out the Los Gatos shop--haven't been there.

I'm curious about the tip to go to Calfee--I've seen people talk about factory tours, but I didn't think you could do things like get fitted, or test ride there (that is according to one LBS). One problem I have, with my height, is how to test ride a bigger frame. The few local shops I've checked so far don't have anything close. I asked if driving to the factory might solve that problem, and was told no. Were they wrong?

You may want to give Calfee a call to see what they have in stock. Calfee has great service and if they have something your size, they'll definitely will let you test ride.

Another shop that does great fitting, but is probably too far for you, is A Bicycle Odyssey in Sausalito, CA. Tony Tom, the owner, is one of the best at fitting in the bay area and can dial you in. You may want to give them a call (415-332-3050) to see what Calfee they have available.

FWIW, I'm 6' 2.5" with a true cycling inseam of 90.5 cm (about 35.5") and I ride a 62 size frame with a 12 cm stem. Everyone is different though so get a good fitting and try to test ride a bike with that setup. The most important part of the fit is to get the correct frame size figured out cause over time your body will let you know what tweaks to the initial setup need to be made. Really, there is no substitute for time in the saddle when it comes to dialing in your bike. Have fun.

I had a good experience with Robinson Wheel Works in San Leandro. We live in the south bay but they were the most responsive when I called several shops and were a real pleasure to deal with -- well worth the ~30 minute drive even though there are closer shops. If I remember correctly, I called Calfee first and they recommended Robinson's. The fitting process took the better part of a morning on a day the shop was closed. I felt pretty comfortable with the process and was happy with the results.

Call as many local or semi-local shops as you can find and see who has something close to your size in stock for a test ride (if any!). In my case it was easier, since I was looking for a 58, but you should be able to come up with something.

As others have said...you're probably a 62cm frame...BUT, if you're going to spend the money on a Calfee...get sized.

One of the finest Bike Shops in the Bay Area is City Cycle in San Francisco. Obviously, a drive for you but WELL worth it! These guys are meticulous on sizing and also...IMPORTANTLY...building your bike. They will take about an hour and a half with you...(bring you bike gear) to properly size you. They measure everything and then review their recommendations with you. They'll also advise on whether or not they recommend custom sizing vs. a standard frame. These guys build a beautiful bike!

They have referred to in articles by Bicycling Magazine...do a search on them!

Enjoy the new bike!

Thanks, all. I'm convinced to call Calfee and visit a few shops before I pick a fitter. My guess is that I'm a 64, or a 66, so I'll probably try to find something close just to get a feel for the bike, and then trust the fitter's recomendations.

Looks like my timing may suck here. Either I'm confused, or the prices just went up a couple days ago. From the Calfee site: Luna: $1495. Tetra: $2395. Dang. I need to confirm that tomorrow. I was still debating between Luna and Tetra, but this would rule out Tetra.
