R2D2,
Click on "My Home", find Personal information, email, password, etc. (underneath the Main configuration section) and click "Edit". Change your display name to whatever you like but remember your user id because that's the name you need to use along with your password in order to log in.
Hope this helps.

nope! as i said / wrote yesterday, when i type in my name, i get this reply:
"You can only have alphanumeric characters in your display name. Special characters are not allowed because this allows users to spoof other display names. You may use the _ character to represent a space."
am i all thumbs, or what?

No, not all thumbs, but rather my inability to understand the problem. The system says not to use special characters in your screen name for security reasons. It wants either letters, numbers, or a combination of both. However, it does allow you to use the underscore character in place of spaces " ".
So are you saying it won't let you change your screen name to something like John_Smith or J_Brown? Please help me out. I need to learn what's going on too.

Okay, here's a little more info...
The website allows you to have 3 names, your "username" (sometimes referred to as your login name, or userid), your "display name" (also known as your screen name), and your "full name".
Your username is something you choose when you register your account. Once you choose this name it remains fixed and you can't change it. Once you have an account, you have the option of giving yourself a display name. That's your screen name that gets associated with your posts. If you don't choose a different display name, your login name is used by default. This is the name that must not contain special "control code" characters or punctuation marks. One of our goals with this forum is to minimize abuse and this feature helps prevent forging other people's screen names by using hit-n-run temporary accounts and creating screen names that are confusingly similar to our legitimate members.
The third name option you have can be found in your preferences area that's called "full name". This name can contain spaces and punctuation, so you could for example, use the name "Capt. John H. Smith III" if you wanted to. The full name shows up in people's profile when they click on the displayname/username in a post and in various other places throughout the site such as clicking on a username after doing a "Who's Online" search.
The fullname is listed in the field that says "Name". Don't ask me why but I think I can modify it to say "Full Name".
Hope this helps.

Not sure why. You should be able to include numbers and letters in your your display name and/or your full name if that's what you like. The only restrictions are no special characters (spaces, invisible 8-bit control characters, punctuation and things like ~!@#$%^...,) in your login name and your display name. Please see my other post.
