Paging Lon, all Penn residents
#4579 - 11/12/04 07:52 PM (66.151.252.149)

Moving at glacial speed, the "people" I've been in contact with want to take another step forward. I'll be having more "conversations" with them next week. When it happens, it's always "urgent" and immediate. Then it stops.

Anyway, even though I'll be on the other side of the state from you, Emmaus, maybe you can help: How much riding can I do in the winter? Road and mountain?

I really belong on the west coast, but alas, job, career, etc. I like the outdoors and open spaces, TALL mountains and nature and stuff (ain't no tree hugger though.) I really haven't been out that way. Always hated the eastern time zone (sports end too late.)

Will I like it out there? I don't care about temperatures and stuff. As long as it isn't miserable outside, the family and I are good to go with the outdoors. Will we like it? I can ride year round here, how much can I do year round out there?

Thanks for any and all thoughts,
Nev

I'm really buried at work but here goes.

Emmaus is the home of Bicycling Magazine as well as the rest of Rodale Press...Runner's World, Men's Health etc. Rodale (the man) built the Trexlertown Velodrone. The racing there is great. This is where Marty Nothstein and other of our track racers have hailed from. He still races there sometimes.

I would guess when you find some folks there would be excellent routes. I've never ridden in that exact area but I know there are pro teams that train around there (I ran into one last year when I was crossing the state) and there are organized rides. If I'm right one leaves the velodrone on Sat. or Sun. and it is a bunch of pros, retired pros and such.

I know just south of there is very nice riding. There are a bunch of Mennonite farms and some roads are really nice. Go to Bike Works in Harleysville ask for Bill, Mr. Ed, or Jason. All great people. You can learn more at their tour company web site Pedal PA They have cue sheets for their area.

I think Eastern PA is heaven on Earth in the winter compared to where I live which is about 6 hours west. We get lake effect weather. There is snow there but usually does not hang around too long. It is about 10 degrees warmer than Pittsburgh so when it is 20 here it is 30 there. We get precipatation they don't get from Lake Erie. I ride most of the winter here. I'd hardly miss a day there. HOWEVER I have friends that live around there that go to a trainer in the winter. It all depends on you. I don't think the 30's is too cold to ride and some people do.

Good luck.

To follow up on Lon's post, up in that neck of the woods you also have the Leheigh Valley Wheelmen, a very active club. Tom Kellogg's shop (Spectrum Cycles) is 10 minutes from the Velodrome - you couldn't find a more affable guy who can turn you on to the local cycling scene. There's also Suburban Cyclists Unlimited, another very active club that runs rides year round out of Harleysville, Horsham and other locations (the folks at Bikeworks, Keswick Cycles in Glenside, Guys Cycles in Feasterville, and Cadence Cycles in Manayunk are also very active with SCU. Do aweb search for both clubs and you'll get to their websites filled with a ton of info). Simply put, from out your front door to within a 40 minute driving radius from where you will be there is an abundance of riding to be had - everything from top shelf racing to laid back recreational rides, from going in circles on the track to exploring the hills and valleys of Bucks, Montgomery, Leheigh, Philadelphia and Chester counties Pa and the hills and valleys across the Deleware River in New Jersey. And that's just the road riding. Off road, you have options ranging from Jim Thorpe up in the Pocono's to the myriad of trails in the Fairmount Park system in Philadelphia (probably the largest "city" park system in the world).
