Bought a used Calfee Tetra Pro
#4733 - 12/08/04 02:51 PM (209.192.166.34)

Hi all

I have always wanted a Calfee, finally saw a used one that my public school teaching salary would allow for and jumped on it. However, I am worried about buying a used carbon frame. Any words on Tetra Pro durability?? I do not yet know if it will be eligible for the 2nd Owner Warranty program. I bought it on Ebay, so pretty much sight unseen. It is a 1" steerer and seems to measure out to a 60. Thanks for the help.

Here is the link to the closed item with picture. Did I do the right thing??? $800

What a smokin' deal. Its a pro(not tri) because there is little clearance between the rear tire and the seat tube.

The serial # inside the driveside dropout will tell you the size.I'm pretty sure you can send it to Calfee, pay the fee,and get the balance of the warranty.

That said, they are quite durable.I would visually inspect it,then ride, then decide whether to send it in.

They are great bikes and I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed mine.

I've purchased 3 used Tetra's, including one for my wife. I've found them to be *very* durable and trouble free, with no worries.

$800.00 for a Tetra frame and fork is a smokin deal! Plus you got some great components for virtually nothing.

Thanks guys for the info, makes me feel better. I have been riding an aluminium bike and have been eager for carbon. The measurement on Ebay said 59 c to c, however it seems Calfee measures center of BB to the seat collar, seems like it would be a 60 then. Thanks again for looking.

Calfees have a slightly sloping top tube, so the 60cm measurement that Calfee gives is a 'virtual' seat tube, as if the top tube were horizontal. More important is the top tube measurement.

The top tube is 58 something. I guess we will see on Sunday when it gets here. It is coming with a THompson seatpost, is it ok to have something other then carbon in the frame??

Absolutely! I've used Thomson seat posts in all my bikes. There is an insert in the seat tube to allow secure clamping of the post.

Because Calfees are sort of a rare, niche kind of bike, you can get a deal on them on eBay. I totally stole a D-Fly off eBay this year, and I haven't regretted it for even a second.

I was wondering about that. The number of them on E bay is low, and they don;t always seem to get what they deserve. This happened to me with a Cervelo a few years ago, before they were so well known. I can;t wait to get the Tetra out on the road!!! I believe these have a ti botton bracket sleeve, so I would hope they're fairly stiff for sprinting???

"so I would hope they're fairly stiff for sprinting???"

Quite the understatement, tho it has nothing to do with the ti BB sleeve. They use ti(or al in other models)to provide threads to attach the BB.

The gussets and tubes reinforce the bb area so well that it is,by far,the most responsive sprinting frame I've owned or ridden.Nothing else I've tried is close.Mine is an 02 Luna Pro,size 60.

Sometimes they go for what they're worth. One D-fly sold for about $6,600 about a month ago. It was really decked out, and since the price just went up, they're kind of in demand used, it just depends on who is bidding, I guess.

Hey!

You got a beyond-smokin' deal for that Tetra Tri. Especially with all of the components. Are the wheels 650's or 700's?

Regardless, if the bike doesn't fit, you could always sell it and probably make more money to buy the next ride.

Well done!
