Raising the handlebar on a threadless '99 OCLV
#476 - 01/05/04 04:02 AM (65.227.127.184)

Just curious if anyone has any suggestions on a how I can rais the handlebars on a 99 OCLV postal frame. I think I have to get a new fork, but I really like the Icon Air rail. Thanks for suggestions. (btw I'm new to the site - looks pretty good)

A couple of things come to mind. Without knowing what kind of stem you have now, you could install a stem with greater rise. If you have a stem with less than a 90* angle, you can "flop" it to get more rise. Then there are 'steerer extenders' which clamp onto your steer tube and effectively raise it 2 or so inches. See here: http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&Category=1527 I don't endorse this company, I'm just using them for an illustration. Steerer extenders can be had at your LBS through the QBP catalog.

I'm using one of the steerer extenders on my mountain bike. I picked it up at Performance. The stem with the greater rise on it would add the least weight.

I'm 6'5" and ride a 62 cm 2002 5900 using a Salsa 115 degree rise chromoly stem. On my bike, with its ~73 degree head angle, the 115 degree stem offers a pretty radical 42 degree rise (from the horizontal that passes through the wheel axles).

Salsa offers a good range of reaches and rises for fitting smallish frames to tallish riders, and offers custom stems as well(http://www.salsacycles.com/site/stemsCustom.htm).

Another way to dial in on this one is to use the LOOK ergo stem. You can play around with the rise and how far do you want your h-bar from the steer tube. It might look goofy for awhile until you get used to it
