Clear Coat Repairs new
#4754 - 12/09/04 08:22 PM (12.145.80.72)

Hi!

Has anyone ever attempted to repair a clear coat ding or chip on their Calfee? I've heard that you can go to an auto parts store to buy and apply clear coat touch-up. Also imagine you could then buff down and smooth the newly applied clear coat to match the original coating finish, no?

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

-Andrew

No.

Calfee has a kit you can buy that has all the instructions, sand paper, clear coat and such. You have to sand first etc. so it is smooth. Otherwise the "patch" is lower and obvious.

If there aren't that many and they aren't big I wouldn't worry about it. The only person who notices is you. Carbon does not hold finishes well. That is one reason for nude. On my Kestrel that has a couple big chips I put a sticker over them. One is the US Flag and one is a Chris King sticker. It works. It is white and touch-ups that are larger don't match well.

Call Calfee if you want the kit.

Take care.

P.S. I have the kit but I decided to not worry about them. I did use the instructions for my Cannondale and they worked well. I just didn't want to sand my Calfee for a little chip.

cheap option... [Re: Agentil]

One "cheap" option for dings, chips and small scratches is clear nail polish. I use it all the time. When your bike gets chipped up enough, you can spend the big bucks for a repaint or reclear.
